Key Evangelical Figures Turn On Trump: 'He Used Us'

Key Evangelical Figures Turn On Trump: 'He Used Us'
One ripped the ex-president for acting "like a little elementary schoolchild." Another warned that if the GOP turns to him in 2024, "we will get destroyed.”

Are they jumping off the trump train only because he lost? His pandering was so obvious from the get-go. Better late than never I suppose. As St Hank once penned:
I was a fool to wander and stray
Straight is the gate and narrows the way
Now I have traded the wrong for the right
Praise the Lord, I saw the light

Trump was/is a blatant, corrupt as hell heathen. They are just now figuring this out? Seriously?

I wish this was someone truly admitting an error in judgment bas3d upon an awakening to facts.

But, instead, this is simply the Party merging behind the message that Trump will not get Party or Party-backing support. They have made the decision, top to bottom, to move on from Trump.

Absolutely. I was going to add that they used Trump as much as he used them. Thanks to Trump and Mitch McConnell, they finally got a Supreme Court willing to overturn Roe v. Wade, the white whale that they had been pursuing for almost 50 years and they're still benefiting from the residual effects of Trumpism through the cultural warriors that have been elected to governorships and state legislatures and are now proposing or enacting anti-gay, ant-trans and anti-CRT (although in fact Critical Race Theory is not taught in public schools) legislation.

First of all, when I refer to evangelicals on a political board, I’m referring to political evangelicalism, not the pure faith. I would never criticize the pure faith. Though it is not my faith and does not feel comfortable to me, I see the Holy Spirit move through evangelicals and I don’t mean to criticize that.

Not the same with political evangelicalism, which is highly developed in the United States, and a very negative force in my opinion. I’m glad to see them come around but I do think they were too tempted by their desire for temporal power, which is a perpetual failing in human history among people of all faiths, and that the apparent metanoia now is more realization that the path to temporal power is no longer there

I’m glad they’re coming around but IMO it’s going to be tough to trust these folks’ judgment on moral and spiritual matters at this point. They’re concerned about winning and losing worldly power, not the damage they countenance to the message of Christ. They’ll line up eagerly in support of the next demagogue

So far I’ve noticed almost all libbies are still upset with pub constituents for turning on trump. Guess we weren’t as smart as you or we should have known better. Lol. For the record, I know a few libbies who voted for Trump first time around.
Y’all might be the most unforgiving bunch I’ve never met.
    Insufferable.

He didn’t use them... They used him to push their agenda. They knew what he was in 2016, they didn’t care. They are just trying to save face, like others, so they can claim they have a moral high ground. They will do it to DeSantis too...

Re the come on man... So your position is they did not know and are truly that clueless? Or you have a problem with their hypocrisy being called out? Obvious they used each other. They held their noses and supported the scumbag anyway to make their dream of killing roe v wade a reality, among other things. At least try to be honest.

People can change, can they not?
You guys have a position of intransigence. Or it’s just blind hatred of a certain party.

The best example of the hypocrisy of the political evangelicals in the US is the comparison of their position in 1998 in contrast with their position from 2015 or 2016 until very recently if original post in this thread is even indicative of their current position. In 1998 when the Clinton Lewinsky relationship was a major news item they said that the personal behavior of the president mattered. When the Orange One announced his candidacy and during his term in office and even after the defeat which he continues to deny until this day they have in effect said that the behavior of the president really doesn't matter insofar as he supports their agenda. I suspect that the reason that they may have changed their position with respect to Trump is because they have DeSantis waiting in the wings. He supports their agenda as much as Trump and he doesn't have any of the Donald's baggage.

Just a reminder of how the position of the political evangelicals has shifted from Clinton to Trump focusing on one of their highest profile spokesmen.
What Franklin Graham Said About the "Private Sins" of Bill Clinton in 1998

I think the arg is that they haven't changed. They are opportunists that have identified a better opportunity. In other words, they don't hate Trump for the right reasons.

Point is they didn't change who they are, only their support of Trump. They have known damn well the entire time who Trump is and chose to support him anyway as a matter of convenience.

Yeah, not speaking of anyone specifically here, but if Trump were still “winning” there would be a whole lot less soul searching.
Who Trump is has been known for many years and many willfully ignored it or even worse, cheered it on. It’s not a coincidence that the bailout is happening now. Better now than never I guess.

They used each other in a marriage of inconvenience which is how politics works. Strange bedfellows are still.....bedfellows.

It was barely a decade ago when the Democratic POTUS said marriage is only between a man and a woman.
