Concerning some of the rest, we're teetering dangerously close to politics . . . but I thank everyone for the restraint I see in the posts. If anyone wants to discuss political things more fully or freely, remember you can start a separate thread in THFSG. There are a lot of good observations and opinions.

I wasn’t justifying anything, just asking a question. Right or wrong, I could see how the two scenarios could provoke different responses.

I don’t disagree that a star athlete is likely going to get different treatment than an injured athlete who has been pushed to transfer and is now tying up a scholarship while not helping the team in any meaningful way.

Under "normal" circumstances, absolutely. And if there is no compelling excuse, that's considered a firing offense by most commercial enterprises, I would think. But this is a kid who may have serious problems with depression, which does mitigate the situation - if that is in fact the case. One thing that is not in question though is that LK has not changed, matured, mellowed or grown the hell up in any shape, form or fashion. Not even a little bit. What a sorry display.

Have you not heard of King David? Adulterer, had a husband killed and connived. O there were consequences as there were with Freeze.
We are all so very imperfect just that some peoples dirty laundry becomes more public than others. Frankly the church is filled with imperfect sinners who will never be perfect on there own. Fact is we’re saved by grace through Jesus’ perfection. Not cheap grace where we live a life of willful sinning but because of Gods grace it motivates us to live transformed lives out of love for such a gift as forgiveness..
I have personally seen changed lives including my own life.
Besides David there are plenty of other Bible characters who made tremendous changes after colossal mistakes.

You lost me at …”I love Kiff”. Anyone who thinks he would be the right fit here may be suffering from a mental illness as well.

You know what the problem is - from our perspective - Kiffin acted like the asshole he is and took this to a far higher level than it ever should have been. Cut the kid, but why be such an asshole about it?

Let’s just assume everything is true, what $10 million (plus damages) did he miss out on for which he’s owed compensation? He’s still on scholarship and was never going play, both by ability and also sounds like choice, what exactly are the damages? Seems like Lane owes him an apology in compensation and 3 more for damages, but one goes to the lawyers for their fee

I'd be quite pleased with a public, genuine apology -- recognition that this matters, contrition. Combined with some relatively-minor sanction from the university, showing it values this and there are consequences.

An apology for the manner in which this was purportedly handled by LK would be a start. Unfortunately, it would have to come from the administration, because few outside of Oxford believe that Lane is capable of actual contrition. Therefore, an apology by LK would largely be dismissed as an insincere, self-serving act. Going forward, if they wish to be viewed as having some modicum of institutional integrity, they'll do more than just acknowledge the fact that their HC is a putz. We already know that. IMO, the young man deserves his day in court at this juncture, and unless UM makes some public and private amends, he's likely to get it. FTR, LK doesn't give a tinker's damn about any of this beyond the problems the situation may create for him personally. Duh.

I have an addendum. If it actually happened, and there’s audio, and Ole Miss ends up with a disappointing season, then he might be gone.

I dunno. The world has gone soft. You can’t talk to people that way anymore. It hurts their feelers and then you have to pay millions for their mental anguish.

Old Testament, sitting on a bench, cranky: "That New Testament stuff is so soft and woke. Love your neighbor blah blah blah. If it was up to me, we'd be seeing some plague and desolation, baby."

Meant in a spirit of jest. I agree with your point. But I also see enough (coaching kids) to feel the new way has a lot of merit.
