I’m going to their next home game next Tuesday. Crawdad’s stadium is about a mile from my office. I’ll be sporting my Gator gear and I’ll be the one chanting Wyatt - Langford.

    Athletic No. 10 prospect overall

    10. Wyatt Langford, OF, Rangers (High A)
    Age: 21
    Bats: R Throws: R
    Height: 6-1 Weight: 225
    Scouting grades: HIT: 60 PWR: 60 RUN: 55 ARM: 55 FLD: 50

Wyatt Langford has four above-average tools and was selected fourth overall in this year’s draft. His hit tool is impressive thanks to his clean mechanics and bat-to-ball skills, plus he has a sharp eye at the plate and the ability to draw walks. His batting practice power is ahead of his in-game power but he still profiles as a 30-home run hitter. Defensively, he’s average in a corner spot with a slightly above-average outfield arm when his mechanics are right.

Langford is on the same path most organizations follow when it comes to the very top collegiate position player signees. Start in rookie ball or Low A to get their feet wet for a couple of weeks and then get promoted to high A for a few weeks before moving up to AA for the rest of the season. Other top picks like Dylan Crews and Kyle Teel are already in Double A right now and of course, you also have rare cases like Nolan Schanuel who was the Angels first round pick and after a combined few weeks at three different minor league levels, was called to the big leagues and is currently playing everyday (and hitting .273).

I imagine Langford will finish the MiLB season in AA and then head to the Rangers MLB spring training as a non-roster invitee in February. Depending on how he plays, it will be either back to AA or up to AAA with the realistic goal of being called up to the big club when MLB rosters expand next September.

I don’t think most understand the huge jump in talent level between AA and AAA minor league ball. This is where most great baseball players tap out. Some phenomenal college stars never make it beyond this point or just get token brief call ups. Also much harder for position players to make a MLB roster than pitchers currently. Lot more opportunities for pitchers due to changing nature of game and more middle relief needs on teams. Position players are playing longer in MLB making it tougher to make big league rosters for those stuck in triple A ball.
