Again, the metrics were changed this year to favor publics, so they all got a boost. Among publics, UCF stayed the same I think (the high water mark for the state’s larger schools), and USF fell three spots from 42 to 45. All this against a back drop of years of steady improvement.
It is clear that the national reputation of the Florida schools took a hit, it’s nearly impossible to argue otherwise. Just a question of degrees, and whether it will continue to degrade, level off, or come back up a bit.

 

UCF rose 13 spots. And this was USF's highest ever ranking according to the Slantinel. Either you are wrong or the Slantinel is wrong.

Oh. DeSantis is now getting credit for the 8years of true educational overhaul which brought our schools to national prominence… BEFORE anyone even knew his name?

No, both are true.
There are two rankings being talked about, one overall ranking for public and private combined, and one for just public schools. In the overall, they did rise, but that was because the way the methodology changed this year. ROi and social mobility were added and class size and alumni contribution rate removed, so public schools were helped and private schools were hurt - Miami cratered, so did Tulane, among others. But when you look at just how public schools are ranked against each other, USF fell among publics, and UCF stayed the same.
It was the same pattern for most state schools, UF fell one spot among publics (that’s where we lost our top 5 ranking), but rose one spot overall from 29 to 28. FSU fell four spots among publics, but went up 2 overall I think. UVA for an outside the state comparison fell 2 spots among publics but went up 3 or four spots overall.

No, But since you are hammering DeSantis, I figured I would point out that Florida over in education was 7th when he took office and now 1st. So, yeah, I'd say he can take some credit for that.

 

Did UCF rise 13 spots or not? USF Stated it has it's highest ranking ever among national universities. So I'm struggling to see where the disconnect is. Is this not USF's highest ranking ever? Did UCF rise 13 spots? If they did then that throws a lot of water on your Desantis is bad for schools argument.

 

The only two threads in this forum I have even posted on in the last few months are this and the Hurricane thread, because this was the only place they were being discussed. I’m not going to spend more energy on this because my point seems clear to everyone else, if you honestly can’t follow or accept what I said or just do t agree, good luck to you.

 

I would proffer that the effects of DeSantis’s policies would be seen quicker and felt more deeply at NCF than other larger schools in FL.
1. The school has a small faculty and student body. The effects of changes will happen quickly and be especially noticeable.
2. He has made NCF a particular focal point of his vision of academia - can you imagine the reaction if it was announced UF was to become Hillsdale College of the south? That’s the announced vision for NCF.

It takes much longer to turn an aircraft carrier than it does a ski boat.

LOL. So now lets focus on the school that had been cratering for years and only follow that example, not the data points about UCF and USF moving up. Got it.

 

NCF was once a very highly rated liberal arts college - not cratering in academic excellence. The change happened quickly to this small institution and it fell significantly in the ratings. UCF is the largest university in FL in terms of enrollment. It will take longer for change to show up. Be patient.

I made the points that
1.NCF was one the best state liberal arts schools in the country.
2. It is a small school
3. The effects of change in a small organization will be evident much quicker than a large one
4. DeSantis in the persons of NCF president Corcoran and NCF board chief Rufu has been particularly focused on NCF.
5. NCF ranking fell 24 places.

UF and FSU Applications Are Up. Why? What Does This Mean for Students?

According to news out of the University of Florida, 60,000 students applied to the fall 2022 entering class, more than double the nearly 29,000 students who applied for fall of 2014.

And according to Hege Ferguson, director of admissions for Florida State University, as of January 7, 2022, they have received 67,291 first-year applications for summer and fall semesters. That is a 21.2% increase compared to January 7, 2021, when they had received 55,500 applications.

I can answer the question squarely from personal experience. The answer is VALUE. I have two kids who had educational choices. The question was whether to send them to Florida for effectively free, tuition wise, or to send them to an out of state school that might have been higher ranked, but approx. $75,000 for tuition alone. Florida was a Top 10 State School, and rising, for one of my kids and for my other was very early in DeSantis reign before anyone knew what he was going to do.

The answer was obvious for us, at the time.

I honestly don’t think the choice is as easy, now. My kids would definitely still have applied to UF, but given their choices, I’m not sure what we would do. Based squarely on my own opinionated projection, I think DeSantis is ruining the value of the UF (and other State school) degrees across the country.
