Let's turn it around: - Donyell Marshall missing 2 freebies to allow the Gators to advance in the tourney in '94 - Mike Miller's shot in Winston-Salem - Cheese's shot to win it against Wisconsin after their player "put on the belt" - Parson's shot at the buzzer to beat NC State All bad ways for the Gators' opponents to lose. But it's hard to beat very quick sequence of events in that Yale game.
it all started with that bullfighter "defense" just allowing him to the hoop. After that they just needed a turnover and a timeout
That was a fast count. I replayed it with a stop watch. That ref was calling the violation about 4 seconds after he handed Orien the ball. I hated losing Orien. Loved his game.
IIRC, the year that Arizona won the title, in either the first or second round, the other team scored the go-ahead bucket with 4 or 5 seconds left. Arizona called timeout. I'm almost certain the other team's coach must have told his guys, "Whatever you do, don't foul!" Because Zona inbounded the ball and the defenders parted like the Red Sea before Moses and the guy took the ball the all the way to the hoop unchallenged for the layup at the buzzer.
That surely is the worst. The Vandy game we won up there when the fans threw tennis balls on the court (Dwayne Schintius) had to be a monumentally horrible game for them; the fans literally snatched defeat out of a game they essentially won.
I remember seeing Danny Ainge go coast to coast in a Sweet Sixteen game to win at the buzzer whilst I was in a bar in Cincinnati. !981 versus Notre Dame.
I like the occasional glimpse at smaller school games where the announcer is clearly a student at the home team university. It’s charming.
