I don’t take too much joy in this because of how it will be received by transgender folks, but it is the right decision. Folks can’t have everything they want always. The do say their aim is for an open division to give them a way to compete.

The important thing is it came from the sports governing body rather than a politician just trying to strip hatred and violence.

Probably correct. Hard to fine tune to prevent any competitive advantage

I agree completely. Genes matter in sports, and, as far as I know, changing gender doesn’t change genes, at least not appreciably.

I’m glad and hopefully college athletics will follow. Good to get this behind us so it can’t continue to be used as a wedge issue. This was done the right way without government involvement.

Smart move. Most Americans are behind this decision.

That’s too bad…. We’re going to lose half the right wing threads on this board.

Tampa said it best that the governing sport body is handling it as one would expect vs Ted Cruz etc.

Unfortunately this will be more of a reason for some to push young kids to transition before they fully understand what that even means.
There is a Reddit thread full of those who did it early very much regretting it. I hardly understood life or what I wanted out of it at 18 let alone a child before puberty.

Aren't you one of the people who want to ban transgender people from being able to start transitioning in time to actually qualify to compete? In other words, you support requirements limiting their ability to compete and then want to use the law to make it impossible to comply with those requirements.

If that's not you, please let me know. But I recall you being one of the people who supported Republican bans on gender-affirming care.

I was talking to a transgender colleague a few days ago. She said that she knew around five or six years old that she was different from the other kids. These kids are far more capable of understanding themselves than you think.

And before some disingenuous person tries to take what I'm saying out of context, no, I'm not advocating for five or six year old kids getting surgeries or taking medications to transition.

    You recall incorrectly.

I have never supported any of these government bans on medical treatments. I have reservations on how and when they are used in some cases, but I don’t want politicians stepping in health care decisions. That should be between family and the doctors.

I have never supported government stepping in on these sports gender issues. The way it ended up being handled was the way it should have worked.

I have been clear on this multiple times, but you chose instead to make assumptions of what I do and don’t support.

It is easy to lump people into Team A or Team B. I have argued that some of the trans trend may very well be social contagion. I have argued that what some are calling trans may very well be complicated by other mental illnesses. I am really skeptical that gender affirming therapy is always appropriate for teens and children. I’ve seen anecdotally a few cases of teens that came out as trans that seemed to be something other than them really being trans.

Having said that, having kids with difficult mental illnesses I would never ever stand in the way of a family and their medical provider in determining treatments. These issues are hard for families, they don’t need blow hard politicians complicating their lives for political gains. While I’m skeptical of some of these treatments on kids, I can’t say for sure what I’d do as a parent in those situations. It is impossible to know. I was very skeptical when our kids psych wanted to prescribe some non trivial meds at an early age. But ultimately I was convinced it was the right thing to do, given the circumstances and choices.

I think what Abbot did in TX making gender affirming care potential child abuse is horrible and inexcusable.

Finally, I admit I am not an expert on the subject, and my perceptions may be proven wrong in time.

As to transgender women participating in womens sports, I have always been opposed to that. But it is up to the regulating bodies. The government doesn’t need to be involved.

You are aware that transitioning for young (under the age of 12) kids is limited to social transition, generally wearing the clothes and their hair of the gender with which they believe they identify and even during the period in which they are allowed to socially transition they should be receiving counseling from medical professionals. Young children do not undergo a medical transition. Medical intervention for young teens (age 12 to 16) is limited to puberty blockers the effects of which are generally considered reversible although there is some debate on the subject. Hormones the effects of which are not reversible are not administered until the age of 16 and with very rare exceptions surgery is not performed until the age of 18.

Rushing to do this assumes people would be doing it for the purpose of gaining an advantage in sports (and presumably only male to female to get that edge). The idea of anyone actually going through that all-the-way for the purpose of gaining an advantage in sports almost seems laughable. It also assumes the doctors and medical professionals would go along with it for this nefarious purpose (rather than legitimate concern for their patient).
