I'm here and I agree with manigordo that there is no right or wrong. My thought was we have the horse power to lockdown the #1 seed so do it earlier, develop the roster and rest, and then gear back up for post season going into our final regular season meet at NC State. I still hate that Oklahoma got the 1 seed without having the best team in the nation.

Not surprised with the score tonight. As Trinity said in her post meet interview, UF can still get better. I'm looking for a 39.95 for Trinity, would have had that if she had stuck her beam landing, 39.9 for Leanne, 39.7 for Megan, Riley to stick her bars landing and to be ready for the beam if anyone gets injured, and both Savannah and Megan to score 9.9 on their vaults. I don't know where that score is, but it would have to be around 199. Nobody else in the country has the capability of doing this. This team is capable of setting the gold standard for women's college team gymnastics.

While UF has the highest score of the year over the previous high of 198.575 set by Auburn/Florida/Utah and the third highest score in women's gymnastics history, the 198.775 is the highest score ever in post season. Anybody know who has the two highest regular season scores and what the scores were?

I don't want to leave out Leah Clapper. She looks like she is getting back to being her normal on the beam. Way to work through it Leah.

Heading into nationals, I think UF has an excellent chance to advance:

    Semifinal Meet 1: Oklahoma/Utah/Alabama/Minnesota
    Semifinal Meet 2: Florida/Michigan/Auburn/Missouri

Meet 1 will be rocking with 4 excellent teams capable of advancing. The difference in Meet 2 is Missouri who edged out UCLA after LSU was upset at NC State doesn't have the potential to score as high as the other teams in Meet 2. In effect, it should be a 3-team race in Meet 2. Breaking down the teams based on their highest scores at the regionals:

    Standings (roadtonationals.com)

    1 Florida 198.775
    2 Oklahoma 198.250
    3 Utah 198.200
    4 Alabama 198.175
    5 Michigan 197.800
    6 Auburn 197.775
    7 Minnesota 197.725
    8 Missouri 197.425

    2 Oklahoma/3 Utah/4 Alabama/7 Minnesota
    1 Florida/5 Michigan/6 Auburn/8 Missouri

Meet 1 teams can and have scored 198+. Meet 2 teams can score 198+ with the exception of Missouri.

Florida's road to the national finals should be a bit smoother than the Meet 1 teams presuming the Gators perform up to their standard. As the defending national champion and having a bit better team than Auburn, it should be Florida and Michigan moving to the finals. Can the Gators be upset? Yes. Can Auburn advance over Michigan? Yes. Can Missouri advance? Extremely unlikely.

In meet 1, it will be a fight to see which teams advance. It would not surprise me to see any of those teams advance. Minnesota is a longer shot at it, but much less longer than the shot Missouri has to advance.

    Final 8 By Conference:

    SEC - 4
    B1G - 2
    Big 12 - 1
    PAC 12 - 1

Any college women gymnastics history buffs want to explain what was going on in 2004? These are the 5 highest scores ever in history:

    1. 198.875 UCLA at home on 2/22/2004
    2. 198.875 Stanford at home on 2/20/2004
    3. 198.775 Florida at Auburn post season regional 4/2/2022
    4. 198.600 Utah at home on 3/19/2004
    5T. 198.575 Utah at home in 2022
    5T. 198.575 Florida at Auburn in 2022
5T. 198.575 Auburn at home in 2022 vs. Florida

The previous top 3 is courtesy of Dr. Sam.

The Olympics would have been in 2004 after the 2004 college gymnastics season.

The Olympics in 21 should have been in 20 but postponed due to COVID Pandemic.

I could understand an influx of Olympians into college gymnastics in 2005 like what has happened in 22 after the delayed to 21 Olympics. What was special going on in 2004?

    From Wikipedia:

    2004 NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championship - Wikipedia

Apparently, UCLA was the head and shoulders best team in 2004. The Bruins national scores didn't reflect the types of scores given out in their home meet record score, same for Stanford and Utah.

The judging got *completely* out of control back then. I think it's starting to again now...

But it's a difficult quandary for the sport IMO. The looser scoring obviously helps with both popularity and parity. If it's judged more strictly, sure we could score lower, but we're probably winning last night by well more than a point if they try to properly separate the routines instead of squishing everyone into the 9.8/9.9 range.

Judging could be stricter, but that’s not the real problem. The larger issue is that the talent has blown past the scoring rules. Way too many athletes are capable of tens now.
They need to reward even more difficulty to further separate the routines and lower the start values on current difficulty, but the politics of it make that hard. The second an athlete has a serious head or neck injury trying to do a double on a vault or beam dismount to get an extra two tenths, the sport will get excoriated.

The concentration of talent could be better dispersed too, but those are coaching staff and recruit decisions, not the decisions of the NCAA powers. Alabama, Auburn now with Suni Lee leading the way, Florida, LSU, Michigan, Oklahoma, UCLA, and Utah will get their talent. Everybody else right now fights hard in meets giving their best shots, but they are clearly below these teams now and have been historically.

UF has tremendous talent in 2022, will have for the next few seasons, and that is with Megan Hurd out for the season and Riley McCusker trying to get back to her normal which is all around. I like it. Let's enjoy the ride while we can. I'd like to see UF hang up 4 straight national championship banners.

    Go Gators!

Very good point. I think it's also partly that coaches have become so good at optimizing routines to get that 10.0 SV with minimum risk and difficulty that even some skills that have been fairly common over the years have largely gone by the wayside. Amazes me how many bar routines don't even have a high bar release anymore, for example.

Not sure that there's any easy solution (if it's even a problem). The code should probably get a few tweaks but I don't think there would be support for trying to get them to approach doing elite difficulty in the college ranks. It's a long season and the girls are mostly already pretty banged up when they get here.

    NCAA Championships Rotation Order:
Gators are awarded with the Olympic Rotation order:
    Rotation 1:
    VT UB BB FX
    Florida Missouri Auburn Michigan
    Rotation 2:
    VT UB BB FX
    Michigan Florida Missouri Auburn
    Rotation 3:
    VT UB BB FX
    Auburn Michigan Florida Missouri
    Rotation 4:
    VT UB BB FX
    Missouri Auburn Michigan Florida

Michigan is ranked #1 on both Floor and Vault. Beam is their weakest event. I would not be surprised to see them in 1st place after 2 rotations. But I expect Florida to pull ahead after the third rotation, and then Auburn to pass Michigan after the final rotation.

Spencer: "And then Florida comes along and…we see you and we are going to raise you with the highest score ever of all time…(in NCAA post season). So Florida in the regional final scores a 198.775, which is the 3rd highest score of all time. The record is 198.875 which both UCLA and Stanford did on the same weekend in 2004…and I really thought we’d never see scoring get to that place ever again where it was for home teams in 2004 and DING! We are right there! They (Florida) are coming for it!"

Jessica: "Every time I watch these meets I am reminded of the mastery of gymnastics we see at the college level. MASTERY is what I’d say about how Florida competed. They are just in control…They did amazing. It was so exciting to watch."

I paid a 1 month fee of $6.95 to ESPN+ in order to watch the regionals. It does totally suck only ESPN+ covered Regionals. But just a couple of years Regionals weren't televised at all. So it's better than nothing..

ESPN+ never did provide the regionals on demand; however, YouTube has all of the regionals on demand if you want to rewatch anything before nationals start Thursday.

"My pick to win the national title is Florida. They should be the best….it’s the most talented roster. They won SECs, scored a 198.775 at regionals……The key to victory is…avoiding the “Florida Nationals Meltdown” we have seen too many times…Florida has not hit all 6 beam routines in the Final since 2016. That is the biggest thing. They have to not beat themselves is the most critical thing for Florida. What’s been interesting to watch is this season there seems to be a definite intent to avoid the problem of previous years…it seems like they specifically tried to avoid this peaking too early. I think they’re making an effort not to overdo it before Nationals."

Yep, "Florida Nationals Meltdown" is the reason that I hope Jenny's more measured approach this year will have them at their peak right now. So far, so good. But the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Go Gators!
