Woke Miller Lite offends fragile beer drinkers

    Ever hear the term commercial appeal? Lesbians and cat women have similar such as Dylan Mulvaney. Getting women to drink more beer (and drink it alone) is about as likely as getting them to attend more women's sports. When are these numbskulls going to learn that you don't make women more interested in something by making men lose interest in it?

    I had to look up the woman in this ad. She's a comedian/actress, married to a man, and they have a child. She's reportedly bisexual but I don't think her sexual orientation was the point of the ad if that's why you mentioned lesbians. Seems like the ad is kinda mocking older beer commercials which ignored womens' roles relative to beer and just put women - usually specific types of women - in bikinis for eye candy.

    I understand that the transgender debate is controversial even if I thought the outrage seemed over-the-top particularly given that ad was a beer ad and not meant for kids. The backlash on this one is more interesting. If anything, social conservatives typically argue that our culture is too sexualized - not under-sexualized. I suppose some men may feel like they're being lectured here or not being allowed to have any fun, but it certainly doesn't offend me.

    If the goal is to try and reach as many customers as possible, why not have two ad campaigns. One for the LGB crown and another one with bikini clad models and tractor pulls.

    Thats basically what they did, they want to please everyone, the problem is you cant hide anything from culture warriors

    I am not anti bikini or sex appeal by the way - even if I'd note that traditional models were almost always White and very skinny. I don't recall seeing women of color or women who were thicker - much less women that resembled women buying the products. Not sure how women feel about that, but it's interesting how important the sex factor apparently is to a lot of men. Our tv shows and ads over the years would have looked much different if advertisers felt the need to sexualize men to the same extent in order to get women to buy products. Would some men resent seeing that on tv all the time or feel bad about themselves? I don't know.

    Those kind of beer commercials were endlessly parodied as retrograde even in the 90s. SNL did the "Schmitts Gay" parody commercial in the Chris Farley days. The Simpsons had the Duffman character too.

    I used to work on the Budweiser account at DMB&B in the early nineties. We were already toning things down with the female casting/wardrobing. Research told us that it wasn't working anymore. We did go to great lengths to cast the most attractive women but they more the girl next door type and never wore bikinis. If they spoke to camera, they were always intelligent. The strategy was to portray male Bud drinkers as guys with smart, attractive girlfriends. I don't quite understand beer commercials these days. Then again, I don't know why anyone these days would drink a Bud or worse yet a Miller Lite.

    Yea, I recall Coors as the cool beer to drink back in the 70s. Maybe due to it not being sold east of the Mississippi. Now it's just one of many. Some places only sell Coors light.

    Whoa killer. Miller Lite is the universal donor of brain cell killers. It’s inoffensive on every level, except the inherent biological level of Beer.

    I have also noticed <ahem> that this latest War On Shit That Don’t Matter has not reduced its price.

    I need the foot stompers to step it up a buck or two.
