If she was naturally aged she would look like this:

That being said since she is a fictional character who never ages I'm fine with Margot Robbie's portrayal of her.

I try to read all views and haven't heard this mentioned in conservative media. I did read that Vietnam banned the movie for the line and the Philippines are considering it. Is there a connection between the Vietnamese and/or Fillipinos and the Republican Party?

That’s clearly a title meant to get clicks and doesn’t match the content of the article. Being concerned about Chinese influence over Hollywood is not “declaring war” on the movie. The very beginning the article calls out that it’s more than just the GOP with concerns.

There are many times that GOP politicians get flustered about things that I think are over the top, but standing up to Chinese hegemony is not one of them. Vietnam has already banned the movie and Philippines is considering it. Countries living in the backyard of the bully should rightfully be concerned. If we don’t stand with those countries, who will?

Is that overreaction to the made up drawing? Maybe so. But we also know the Chinese are big on symbols too.

Sort of sounds like "war" to me ...

“Senator Cruz has been fighting for years to prevent American companies, especially Hollywood studios, from altering and censoring their content to appease the Chinese Communist Party,” the spokesperson said

Blackburn, in a tweet, said “‘Barbie’ is bending to Beijing to make a quick buck.”

“Hollywood studios that bow to Communist China prompted me to introduce the SCREEN Act,” Green said in a statement. “In no world should American films be spreading CCP propaganda. I encourage all film studios to stand with integrity or lose support from federal entities like the DOD.”

Seems like a lot of stupidity over the "map" I posted above.

Conservatives' regular attacks on Hollywood is just so stupid. One of the reasons the Chinese are so intent on developing their film industry is because it is such an immense source of soft power throughout the world. It's one of the great American advantages we have yet, yet conservatives are always trying to tear it down, just like they try to tear down so much of what makes this country powerful and successful.

Even those who hate the United States throughout the world love our film industry. For God sakes, the leader of the Avengers, who supposedly protect all of the world, is named Captain America.

That's not to valorize all of the industry. I can't wait to read Burn it Down, and I hate so much about the business itself. But as a source of international soft power, it is immense and underappreciated.

“Declare war on” is almost always used in a derogatory way. Nothing wrong with standing up to China. I would not have gotten worked up over the map. In fact, I would not have even noticed it. But I don’t influence geopolitics.

Ted Cruz was railing against the movie. I don't know how widespread it is among the party but certainly one of their leading public voices is making a big deal about it.

I am very very familiar with the world controversies, especially among those we tried to enlist in the now forgotten TPP, over the 9 Dash line. I am very very sympathetic to concerns about it and would consider not seeing any movie which seemed to promote it.

But honestly, when I saw the actual image, the complaint seemed crazy. Yes Vietnam already banned the movie on that basis. I linked to it in the China thread yesterday. But that image doesn't suggest anything about the 9 Dash line to me.

Hollywood has been known to self-censor to protect access to the Chinese market. But this does not appear to be an example of that.

    Good post.

I appreciate it when a studio doesn't yield to China's censorship. I also understand when studios do. The movie industry a for-profit industry and China's market is large. Gotta look out for the shareholders in a capitalist society, amirite?

Sounds more to me like tossing the typical.lazy red meat, especially when it seems like the random dashed line on the map -- that looks nothing like the actual shape of the 9 dash line -- has nothing to do with "appeasing China to make a buck"...
