That makes sense. I'm not an especially sophisticated moviegoer. We were just impressed with her performance in Oppenheimer. We had heard great things about Robert Downey Jr's performance. I don't think he was given great material to work with in his role, but that one didn't hit me near as much as her, and I was expecting that his performance would be the one that was really the underrated contributor to the movie. Of course, I was most impressed with Rays' pitcher Tyler Glasnow, who was really amazing in his first performance
I actually had no idea that the Senator dude was RDJ until later, because I'm so used to him playing a version of himself
And then there are people like myself who don’t search for movies or go to the theatre to watch them. I’ll go to Redbox occasionally like I did for the Top Gun remake.
I finally saw both Oppenheimer and Barbi … in the same weekend. The following comes with the caveat that I like almost every movie I see in a theater. If I’m going to pay to see it, I’m going in with an attitude that I’ll enjoy it. The deal my son and I made with my wife and daughter is that if they see Oppenheimer, we’d see Barbi. (Bad deal by us, by the way, because my daughter is a rising senior at UF studying chemical engineering). Oppenheimer was great, and really true to history. If I had one complaint it would be that they did not dive deeper into the traitorous roles by some of the scientists at Los Alamos. I have to say I expected that Oppenheimer was going to be very “preachy” in an anti-war passage, and it really wasn’t. It let the science do the talking on that front. Again, really good movie and surprisingly entertaining through the full 3 hours. Barbi was good. I was borderline dreading seeing it, but it was definitely entertaining. I thought it was very well done. I’ve read the patriarchy feminism posts above, but I think many of the posters missed the point of the picture. I think the theme of the movie is that we pay too much attention to us vs them. Too much feminism is bad. Patriarchy is bad. Too much power is bad. Instead, rather than worry about structuring society, treat each day as if it is your best day. Strive to be your best, do everything you can to open doors, seize your own life, and understand life is not perfect. It’s a flawed existence, and the flaws themselves makes life so beautiful. And Margo Robbie, as the narrator concedes, is perhaps Hollywood’s worst picks to emblemize life’s imperfections.
I saw Oppenheimer this last weekend and am about 2/3 way through the book it was based on. Really enjoyed the movie and thought it was true to the book at least. I think Einstein seemed to be more referenced in the movie than the book, though maybe he's mentioned more in the last third of the book. Naturally, some of the scenes are difficult because the book had the time to explain the competing accounts, which is more difficult for a movie. The acting was really incredible. Overall, very much what I expected, which was a good thing.
Barbie hit another milestone, passing The Dark Knight as Warner Bros. top grossing film of all time in North America at $537.4 million. Worldwide gross just passed $1.2 billion. As excited as I was about it, I didn't expect it to be such a cultural phenomena. I do expect it to do well at the Oscars. Gosling's probably a slam dunk as are Greta and Noah for the best screenplay and Greta for directing. Wouldn't be surprised to see a near sweep of the craft awards. Barbie Box Office: Biggest Warner Film Ever Domestically – The Hollywood Reporter Really excited for Greta and Noah. They slaved for years in the indie/mumble-core world to get to this moment. With the two strikes going on it seems like a good time to chill at home with their kids.
Love everything about this and also happy for Greta and Noah. But don't forget that Margot Robbie not only starred, but really procured the IP and truly was the key producer/impetus behind it.
Absolutely. None of this would have happened without her. Was not a big fan of hers until now. What an amazing vision she had for this project. Brilliant decision to eventually cast herself in the title role. She's instantly become one of the most powerful producers in Hollywood.
Is your daughter going to graduate in May? My son's in the same track but said he's in for another semester unless he kills himself this year.
December 2024. She switched from Chemistry to Chemical Engineering and missed a course(maybe a few?) she would have needed for May graduation. How does your son like the Chemical Engineering program?
Exactly. As Leonard Cohen put it, Ring he bells that still can ring Forget your perfect offering There's a crack in everything That's how the light gets in My screenwriting mentor had an even simpler take on the them. "It's hard being a woman. It's hard enough just to be human."
LOL, the organic 2 calc 3 and physics 2 semester almost sent him off the deep end but ended up pretty good and liked last year much better. He got an internship this past summer and still took 2 classes but I believe he said he'd have to take 18 hrs in fall and spring to pull off a May graduation.
I keep telling my daughter, who also “threatened” to do the 18 credit semester to finish, “Why rush life”? It got through to her (or maybe it’s just my imagination-lol) I’m sure they know each other, at least by face. Meanwhile, best of luck to your son!!
