An interesting read on why college numbers have fallen dramatically over the last decade. And it’s not as simple as elitism - rising costs vs expected reward, stories passed down from college grads not doing well, confusing financial options, among other things. But it has real world Implications for our economy, and for the divide in this country. U.S. sees 'alarming' decline in number of high school graduates going to college as many ask: Is it worth it?
I'd be curious if the technical institutions had a major increase in students. Plumbers, electricians, AC, AV, ect ect are killing it in FL.
Here's a thought... why don't you research your question, share your findings with the community and then opine on it relates to the OP. I'd be down for that discussion.
Its really no secret that our only real plan to compete with China is to have a dumber workforce that will work for less money. Especially since we dont want 'low skill' immigrants coming here ... so who do you think is going to be the low skill workers that do all those jobs?
That's the magic of Fordist production, you can break any complex operation into discrete tasks which require minimal skill and thus low pay
The author appears to be too reliant upon data from 2020. Birth rates are a major factor, but Covid exacerbated the issue.
Because they already have all they need living with mom. #participationtrophy When the youngsters started saying “why do I need a driver’s license?”, all was lost
What was snarky? That I asked him to research his own question (which I have a interest) in lieu of others making the effort? As a moderator, don't you want all of us to be productive contributors to the forum?
Yes, that's why capital tries to deskill it and break it down into simpler tasks that can be done by people with a more limited set of skills.
C'mon man. There are all sorts of trades on this board. I've many time made a legal query here knowing GL or Ben will offer the quick answer. I did the same for @gatorpa and some others with a medical background throughout covid This is a place of conversation. Do you wikipedia or google every question you ask around the water cooler?
It was not snarky. If his question was directed at an expert verses a "jump ball", I wouldn't have asked him to help. I now regret engaging with him as a peer. Happy?
Community college enrollment is down, but skilled-trades programs are booming There is one for you master.
You can thank Obama and his party for the education policy failures that led to this. Now kids are strapped with excessive debt, worthless degrees and careers at Uber/Starbucks. "The (Obama) administration funneled $7 billion into the (School Improvement Grants) program between 2010 and 2015 — far exceeding the $4 billion it spent on Race to the Top grants. The money went to states to distribute to their poorest-performing schools — those with exceedingly low graduation rates, or poor math and reading test scores, or both. Individual schools could receive up to $2 million per year for three years, on the condition that they adopt one of the Obama administration's four preferred measures: replacing the principal and at least half the teachers, converting into a charter school, closing altogether, or undergoing a "transformation," including hiring a new principal and adopting new instructional strategies, new teacher evaluations and a longer school day." my guess… Universities don’t care. Absent state legislators mandating US citizens having priority in state schools, we are in a US economic replacement strategy for future talent, business owners, and innovation — maybe we have always been this. Look at the PhD programs enrollments. The best and brightest from around the world coming to US Universities and destroying the grading curves. Distance learning is expanding to educate beyond borders. Sadly, US born talent is a replaceable commodity. Competition is global.
Plus they pay big tuition. Walk around the science labs, billybob is missing, although Bobby Joe is at the Junction of water research.
Right, which puts the arguments of college / university price control vs capitalist supply and demand at odds. Why would a University cut tuition if they can fill it with someone willing to pay? The only answer is nationalize the education to your citizens or let the free markets decide. But, hey… no complaining if you are fixing the pipes for someone who speaks with an accent. That doesn’t make them less American than you.
The Obama administration's move to help poorly performing P12 schools caused debt issues in higher education and trapped kids into earning worthless degrees? Perhaps you can elaborate on the cause/effect you are proposing.
