Why is Napier's buyout $26 Million when Kiffen's is only $4 Million?

Thanks, but I wasn’t discussing CBN’s contract, only correcting the inaccuracy concerning the Kiffen buyout if he were terminated.

He beat no major P5 schools with more than eight wins. IOW, he beat Zook's Gators and the Gator Nation would be calling for Zook's head. Being a suitor of Notre Dame meant getting rid of Cheesburger Charlie. To me, it was not entirely a slam dunk. It seemed that way in retrospect.

Well as I recall no team came within 10 points of Utah that year and they finished 12-0, ranked in the top #5 and they didn't play a Sunbelt schedule.
Everybody gets an opinion, but Meyer's resume was far better in my book and I said that when fans made a similar comparison when Napier was hired.. Still hoped Napier would be a winner tho.

This tells me you didn't tune in to see with your own eyes, if the hype was warranted or manufactured.

If you had, you would have seem a buttoned up, extraordinarily disciplined team playing brilliantly beyond their apparent talent and physical ability.

Had you done the same with Mac and Napes, you would have seen no such thing.

Urban Meyer stood out to the CFB world, and the product on the field confirmed the buzz.

Mac's team confirmed the lack of a buzz, and Napes' left you scratching your head as to why there was any buzz at all.

(Note for context--the above refers to each respective coach's pre-Gator days).

Seems like losing seasons and NCAA infraction charges should affect buy out money paid to a fired coach. Why can’t that be in the contract?.

Would a top5 coach agree to an incentive laden contract? I think he would laugh himself to death. A coach no top team would even consider is what that will get you. They need a list of all the top coaches in order and try to get the best one they can get if they are serious about winning. I’m not sure who they could get to say yes but that’s not what they’ve done in the past. If they get another 6 mil coach, they are just betting on hope. They can look at a coach and the contract it’ll take to get him to say yes and think that’s too much. Then get another Napier. How much did Debour get? That’s where you start.

One is a payment from the Athletic Association to the coach… the buyout necessary to Fire Napier (26 to 28 million), and the other is a payment to the athletic association from another school (Ole Miss) to compensate contractual for hiring their coach, in this case Kiffin for reportedly 4 million.
It’s true that Florida’s Athletic Association would have to pay both to the tune of 30+ million, but they are two completely different transactions… and while unpleasant absolutely doable.
I don’t know what an outside university would have to pay UF to hire Coach Napier away, but you can bet it’s a lot less than the 26 to 28 million it would take to fire him, and I’m sure Florida would be perfectly reasonable in any such negotiation.

Bro! You can't let that kind of toxic common sense pollute the public domain! Delete this post STAT, else the powers that be, who have dictated from on high, a strict prohibition agsinst common sense of any sort or kind, shall arrange to have your door politiely knocked upon with a battering ram and an escort detail of black attired stormtroopers to come and *invite* you to their hospitality facilities...

Remember that SOS also hired Jon Hoke as defensive coordinator, when he had been defensive backs coach at Missouri.

I recall someone here used to emphasize their displeasure at that by repeating “Missouri,” and putting the second one in capital letters (“defensive backs coach at Missouri, MISSOURI”). Maybe added an exclamation point or two.

I think people are confusing the terms buyout and severance. You are correct that Kiffin can buy out his contract for 4 million. However, if Ole Miss lets him go, then they owe him a severance of 80% of his remaining contract.

One silly thing in that article. At the end of this year, his salary will be bumped to $9 million, but Ole Miss will still owe him $150,000 retention bonus. The retention bonus is silly compared to what he’s making already.

I watched Utah regularly in 2004. They WERE great, granted, but it was still a Mountain West team, and they beat no very good P5 team that year. What does it matter that they beat everyone by three TDs? It wasn't a slam dunk by any means...AT THE TIME. I couldn't care less about "the buzz." Nothing is certain. Four years later, Utah went 13-0. Utah is like TCU, a team that could be mediocre one year and incredible the next.

I was all for Meyer being hired, and was thankful he didn't go to Notre Dame instead. But we all knew the reason why he came to Florida in the first place.

"At Florida, I could win NOW!"

I seem to remember someone once saying something along the lines of what should be done eventually should be done immediately.

I'm sure someone here remembers the exact quote. And I believe it was Foley that said it?

I think sometimes the people writing the check tell you you can afford the defensive backs coach from Missouri and once it fails, they realize they need to write a much bigger check for the top-of-the-line model. I don’t think shopping in the six to $7 million range for a coach at this point is really swinging for the fences. If we hire Kiffin, the contract will be enormous. He has not proven his self to be the most trustworthy person and I would hate to be on the hook for that buyout. What do you do if he pulls a Jimbo fisher on you. It will probably be a lot worse than $26 million down the drain. Whether it makes any sense or not, I would guarantee you there’s at least 10 schools out there that would give Kiffin a ridiculous contract. You can either match that ridiculous contract or hire liberty’s coach. I wouldn’t say either or bad choices, but both come with a lot of risk.

It can be, if the coaches agree to it.

    Which they won't.

Yea, not many coaches agree to any type of “punishment”. NCAA infractions could certainly justify cause, and at least give the school some bargaining power to negotiate the buyout.

It would be nice if something more similar to Harbaugh’s renegotiated contract at Michigan became more the standard, but that’s not reality. More likely the 10 year, fully guaranteed contracts become more standard. There’s already a bunch of those.

These coaches usually only get one shot. Napier going back to the minors. Les Miles back down. Get that lifechanging generational money when the opportunity arises. I think Napier is trying his best and I’m not mad at him.

UF has to pay both buyouts so good for us if Lk’s is low.
