Why is Napier's buyout $26 Million when Kiffen's is only $4 Million?

Was thinking that to buy out Napier it is not just the $26 Million for his buyout you have to think about, it is also the buyout of whatever coach you want to replace him with also. So, I started with Kiffin only coach on any of the lists I have seen who has won and recruited in the SEC, and was shocked to see his buyout was $4 Million. Makes no sense. How does Mississippi get Kiffin with only a $4 Million buyout? If Napier was making around $1 Million per year, why did we offer him $7.5 Million? Anyone? Bueller?

Oh and this guy has made a lot of money fleecing desperate universities

Pretty sure he owns a beach that all his clients get to enjoy with their buyouts after they get fired.

Napier's buyout is 85% of what's remaining on his contract, so $28.5M

Kiffin's buyout is 80% of what's remaining on his contract, which is WAY more than the $4M you stated.

I still don’t understand the buyout process. Why do schools(Florida) cave in to these contract demands of coaches/agents. Napier was making 2 mil/year. Couldn’t we have given him 4mil/year and gotten him and then get him to agree to a small buyout say like 5/mil over the life of the contract? Sounds reasonable to me.

Napier’s buyout was never about Napier. No one was coming to buy him out.

It was a way of guaranteeing Stricklin’s job security under the pretense of a long-term commitment to a coach after 3 failed hires in a row.

Schools get focused and panic on certain candidates. Agents ram this issue, um, home :)

    1) Agents are way better at negotiating contracts than ADs, so ADs always lose and agents can extort these one-sided deals out of Universities. The gentleman pictured in post #5 is Billy Sexton, the most notorious agent in this business (and was Billy's agent).
    2) The value of a great coach is SO much, that agents have made it standard to pay all coaches as if they're already great/accomplished.
    3) Hiring a football coach is the most important decision an AD at Florida makes. Better to overpay for the best guy than go value hunting.
    4) ADs know their job security is iffy if the football coach doesn't work out. They're like a GM for a pro sports team, if they sign a couple guys to big contracts that flop, they probably won't be around to have to clean it up. So they don't care if there's a crippling buyout when the coach is a complete flop.

Ideally, ADs would band together and say "let's not give out these dumb mostly guaranteed contracts", but that's collusion so illegal and won't happen. But I do expect the next Florida coach to have more performance incentives in his contract.

You can’t claim that you want to be competitive and throw a 4m offer on the table. And though it looks like a bad hire now BN was a hot name at the time.

Nailed it. AD and UAA staff negotiate a major contract once every few years. Sexton does it every week. You’d think we’d bring in consultants. But we’re an unserious program.
Our “contracts SME” Tealer left recently. Crazy we needed up in this situation again after mcelwain and Mullen. Again though we’re not serious about football.

If it was the AD’s money there wouldn’t be a buy out problem. I retired from the Government as an executive. I understand completely the lack of accountability and failure to associate value with possible outcomes.

The contract is bad, no doubt. But what's worse is UF's "process" (ugh, that word) for hiring football coaches. I don't remember a single hire in the past 35 years which used a selection committee. Every one was chosen unilaterally by a single person - usually the AD, but not always.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I’m sure SS did not hire Napier in a vacuum. He was the guy we wanted this time around, just like Chip Kelly was the guy we wanted last go around.
