You should watch the movie Sideways if you haven’t. Hilarious.

Used to think that drinking would loosen up my wife and possibly increase the chance I could get lucky. Now I’ve come to realize that for years I’ve been throwing my money down a rat hole.

Thanks. I should have mentioned this one before - one of my favorites I saw over the last couple years:

    Another Round (2020) - IMDb

    Storyline

There is a theory that man is born with half a per mille too little, that alcohol in the blood opens the mind to the outside world, problems seem smaller, and creativity increases. We know it well: after the first glass of wine, the conversation lifts, the possibilities open up. Martin is a high-school teacher who feels old and tired. His students and their parents want him terminated to increase their average. Encouraged by the per mille theory, Martin and his three colleagues throw themselves into an experiment to maintain a constant alcohol impact in everyday life. If Churchill won World War II in a dense fog of spirits, what could the strong drops do for them and their students? The result is positive in the beginning. Martin's class is in a different way now, and the project is being promoted to a real academic study with the collection of results. Slowly but surely, the alcohol makes the four friends and their surroundings loosen up. The results are rising, and they really begin to feel life. As the objects go inboard, the experiment progresses for some and goes off track for others. It becomes clearer and clearer that alcohol can generate great results in world history, but that all daring can also have consequences. The film is described as a fun, touching and thought-provoking drama about friendship, freedom--and alcohol. —Kenneth Kjær

Never heard of it, so I looked it up. Alan Rickman plays a character named "Steven Spurrier."

Well, I don’t know about you, but for the past 14 years or so, it’s been the Gators who drive me to drinking.

I haven't read every post in this thread, so it may have already been said, but I honestly think humans drink because life is hard and involves suffering at various levels and intensity. Suffering can be intense, or quite mild, such as anxiety, uneasiness, or general dissatisfaction with our life circumstances. Some of us are better able to control the amount of drinking we do, some aren't, but throughout human history, man has looked for, and generally found, mind altering activities. There are many other vices available besides just alcohol of course, like drugs, sex, gambling, that can provide rushes and moments of "bliss", but it seems like we as a species, are trying to avoid the suffering as much as possible.
There are obviously better and healthier ways to do this, but probably not easier and more convenient.

You hit it. Things some are reluctant to admit. Humans are walking through life in a lot of (mostly) emotional pain. Alcohol can take the most dire scenarios and provide at least a momentary reprieve. In some cases, it only dulls the pain to a level that’s more tolerable. Some may start with it just being a crutch to loosen them up around others, but I suspect in a lot of those cases it ends up being used to blunt pain at some point.

Speaking for myself, I was fine until Mac started talking about his dog playing QB. It was downhill from there.

There was a 60s or 70s movie that had an “orgasmatron”. You would step into it and boom, off you go

Anyone know if a real one was ever made?

Woody Allen "Sleeper". I think he convinced Diane Keaton that the old fashioned way was better.

I’ve use alcohol to dull the pain and reduce stress in the past but it’s been a rare occurrence for me. A buzz can be very satisfying.

What pleases me a lot and lifts me up is listening to some of my favorite songs and riding my motorcycle back when I owned one.
