TikTok is still scheduled to be shut down soon. Is this about “safety” or “money”?

Meta and Google are expected to split up TikTok’s $10B in US revenue heading to $15B in two years. It’s really interesting those CEO hounds have been in orbit at the Florida White House all month. Government choosing winners and losers and always choosing the same winners.

We are headed toward a Russian Oligarchy model thanks to the working class. Thanks guys.

NYT: Who Stands to Gain From TikTok Shutdown?

Analysts at Bernstein have estimated that, should TikTok be banned, Meta could draw up to 60 percent of TikTok’s American ad revenue, while YouTube could take another 25 percent or so.

TikTok Creators Left In Limbo While Awaiting Decision On Potential Platform Ban

According to a report by Goldman Sachs, the so-called creator economy, which has been fueled in part by TikTok, could be worth $480 billion by 2027.

Because the opportunity to monetize content exists across a range of platforms, a vast amount of creators have already diversified their social media presence. However, many TikTok creators have credited the platform — and its algorithm — with giving them a type of exposure they did not receive on other platforms. Some say it has also boosted and provided opportunities for creators of color and those from other marginalized groups.

China has already said that TikTok cannot sell the algorithm for the platform. Would not surprise me to see China working on a replacement platform that uses the same algorithm and bringing it to market shortly before TikTok is sold.

TikTok is a security risk. Reason some members of congress are all in on this ban is because they've received classified briefings on this.

I use TikTok all the time. I get movie reviews, cooking recipes, comedy, and hiking videos. I get zero politics. Zero.

Meh. If China takes over the world using my favorite cooking recipe I’ll be impressed.

The risk is in the use of the platform not the information you see on it

I'm not really concerned. I'd say 75% of the items in my house have parts that came from China. My electronics are filled with parts from China. A lot of the generic medications that Americans say come from China. The EV batteries in our electric cars come from China. It's already too late

And don’t forget the clothes. But none of those items pose the risk of TikTok

LOL. OK. If they would like to know which restaurant I was in yesterday and whether I went to the gym 2 or 3 times last week then they have me. Also, so does Google, Apple, Meta, and a whole bunch of folks who would sell me out faster than China. The President probably shouldnt carry any phone but joe average is probably not going to be affected by location data.. that you can turn off.

I leave open the possibility that there is some risk I dont understand but my location data is pretty benign.

How would you know? My whole household uses tiktok and gets entertainment that they typically want to see. Its like netflix recommendations. You get out what you put in. If I were getting Trumpers complaining about America 24/7 then i would would not use the app.
