I think @GatorPlanet exposed your suggestion that this is the worst Gator basketball team since '74 with evidence. His wasn't a weak argument at all.
It's just frustrating - rather than trying to higher the top coach, they are trying to find the next Billy D. Billy is/was one of the greatest college coaches of all time, you don't just find another Billy D. I think we are light years behind most the league now, it's been very difficult watching this team play with their lack of execution. I always question what practice looks like when you see an offense and defense like ours. With the transfer portal like it is now, hard to develop players, most will leave after riding the bench the first season. from the 04s brewer and Horford got minutes, but Noah and Green and even Humphrey (not an 04) came off the bench behind Roberson, David Lee, and Matt Walsh. The grown of the 04s from year 1 to year 2 was astonishing. Those players probably transfer in the model era..... All i ask is to watch an entertaining style of basketball and compete every game.
his “evidence” is simply blurting out a bunch of final records, one of which was for the only team in UF history to feature Jason Williams - easily the most exciting basketball player to ever lace it up as a Gator. Williams was suspended and left the team, leading to a late-season tailspin. it is very easy for anyone to see that Billy’s ‘96-‘97 Gators would beat this team by 20, and I presume that manny of the other pieces of “evidence” are similarly flawed once exposed as more than just a set of meaningless numbers. I would also bet lots of money a team with 2 All-American Freshmen in Stacey Poole, Dwayne Schintzus and another AA in Livingston Chatman would whip this poorly-coached squad. numbers aren’t evidence, and they’re often used to divert people from the lack of evidence
now that this season is playing out like everyone’s worst fears come to life. new University President, one who may not tolerate this because he is a sports fan who likes winning. I think an outsider like Sasse will come in and simply ask - “Why do we keep hiring these young, inexperienced coaches?
Two 7-21 records are not just meaningless numbers. If pointing out those two horrible teams were perhaps worse than this season's edition is just "blurting out" meaningless numbers, so be it. Correct numbers, by the way, ARE evidence. Done pointing out the obvious here.
It is Basketball 101 to feed the post with an decent low post scorer, draw the double team, and pass out to a three point shooter that gets the ball in perfect position to shoot it. A pass from near the basket out to an open shooter that is already squared up should be money. Problem is that we really don't have three point shooters. No Lee Humphrey. No Kenyan Weaks. No Joe Lawrence. At best we have are some streaky shooters from that arc. I agree with Golden that running CC through the high post is the best use of his talents given the players around him. He can face and shoot from there. He can face and pass to a rim cutter. He can face and take it to the rim if he is single covered and the lane is otherwise open. He is a triple threat from there. It doesn't take advantage of his low post skills but we have a team that can't take advantage of those skills.
I was a Gator student during the John Lotz years. Never had a very good team, but the occasional upset at Alligator Alley was always fun. I am still optimistic about Golden. Recruiting is certainly different these days, but Billy D's first team probably had many in our fan base screaming
I was also there from the beginning. It was weird how the student section started filling up as the game went on. Added in edit: IIRC it was an ESPN game with Dickie V in the house to talk up Shaq. Also IIRC Scott Stewart rubbed Dickie V's bald head after the game. LOL.
What was your evidence? Edit: I see it was another poster who contends this is the worst team since '74. Do you agree with that? If yes, what is your evidence?
Agree - I always thought Captain Ahab got a bad rap. He took the reigns amid a hoops crisis at FL and finished with a very limited team, including the monumental win against Shaq & Stanley Roberts. One of my all-time favorite games and I was in attendance playing in the hoops band.
I wasn't. I knew that our cupboard was bare but he made the best he could of Greg Stolt. Greg could shoot the three but he was asked to do too much and often sufferred from cramps. He was the one guy that fit BD's mold when he got here. On a few occasions I shot with him at Florida Gym.
Yep. Dickie V was there. I was on the court right next to him afterward, as the band entered and exited through the loading dock. Upon entering, I walked across the court looking up at Shaq/Roberts and thinking "it's going to be a long night." Seeing them at floor level was something.
I gave specific evidence that this is the worst team since at least 89-90 (because Stacey Poole, Dwayne Schintzus, & Livingston Chatman would kill these tiny, terrible guards and weak post presence) and I also exonerated the 96-97 team because they had J-Will and Billy and J-Will got suspended and cratered the end of the season. the poster who just gave a single line of data for each of his points has had two of his data points knocked down, this would be considered evidence and it’s sort of baffling that you missed it as it is the literal content of the post you replied to. I wasn’t alive for the 70s Gator Basketball era, but this is certainly the worst team since 1980
