Talk about a law in need of reform


Bryan Howard was convicted of driving on a suspended license. Three times. He was convicted of fleeing the scene of an accident another two times.

He was found guilty of careless driving in 2018, twice. He went to court three years later for driving on a suspended license — for the fourth time — but that case was dropped. That same year, Howard was sued for damages from a car crash. And earlier this month, he crashed his mother’s car into a tree.

Yet early Tuesday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol, Howard had a valid state driver’s license when his truck slammed into a bus in Marion County, killing eight farmworkers and injuring at least four dozen others.

Despite having issues on his driving record that span 18 years, Howard, 41, did not meet Florida’s legal threshold to have his license taken away, experts told the Tampa Bay Times.

Police say the pickup’s driver, 41-year-old Bryan Maclean Howard, was impaired. He faces eight counts of manslaughter charges and is being held in the Marion County Jail without bond.

In the hours after the crash, seven workers spoke to the Tampa Bay Times, recounting what happened on the bus, provided by Olvera Trucking Corp., and their experiences with the company. They described long hours, strenuous labor, and now, a tragedy that has made them question whether any of their sacrifices have been worth it.

The crash is among the deadliest involving Florida farmworkers within the past two decades. It marks another chapter in a long history of crashes involving laborers that has left dozens dead and injured across the state. Nationally, vehicle collisions were the leading cause of job-related deaths among farmworkers involved in harvesting in 2022, the most recent year federal data is available.

Like the Olvera workers, laborers frequently travel long distances to work, placing them at higher risk of collisions. The vehicles carrying them often lack seat belts.

The Marion County crash that killed eight Mexican farmworkers and injured at least 40 others on Tuesday was the latest in a line of tragedies involving migrants commuting along narrow rural roads in cramped older vehicles — often before dawn.

Vehicle crashes were the leading cause of job-related deaths among U.S. farmworkers in 2022, the latest year available, according to federal statistics. They accounted for 81 of 171 fatalities.

What's wild is that it is impossible to tell from the tweet whether he agrees with this move or doesn't. If you don't know who the writer of the tweet is, it is impossible to tell if they are true believers or pointing out the absurdity. Both groups are saying the exact same things.
