It looks like schools are deciding to play it safe because technically they would be breaking the law.

With the availability of the popular Advanced Placement psychology course still in question, Orange County and other Florida school districts are pivoting to other college-level options.

Maria Vazquez, superintendent of Orange County Public Schools, said Saturday via text that her district was for now still moving students out of AP psychology, as it announced Thursday.

“At this time we are proceeding with giving schools the choice of AICE and IB Psychology and AP Seminar,” she wrote.

The problem may be that students will not get college credit because the AICE course may not be acceptable as a college level course. So, again, the law really is “don’t say gay” as opposed to parental choice.

In the June ruling, U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle wrote that the report was, “from the outset, a biased effort to justify a predetermined outcome, not a fair analysis of the evidence.” Hinkle is a judge in the Northern District of Florida and was appointed by former President Bill Clinton. He’s the same judge who declared that DeSantis was wrong to remove Hillsborough State Attorney Andrew Warren but that he couldn’t give him his job back because he lacked jurisdiction.

In the Medicaid case, Hinkle cited other inconsistencies in the state agency’s process. Officials typically only prepared this type of report when considering a new treatment for Medicaid coverage, “but here, apparently for the first time ever,” the agency prepared a report on already-approved treatments, Hinkle wrote. And they brought in experts, he noted, who were “known in advance for their staunch opposition to gender-affirming care.”

Damn. I think this stance borders on the extreme, given that the State has apparently said the AP course can be taught in its entirety.

 

No one wants to offend the emperor and that’s a feature, not a bug. It’s the reason that all of these laws regarding education are written in a vague manner. The state is banking on districts and teachers to self censor.

English teachers in Hillsborough County are preparing lessons for the new school year with only excerpts from William Shakespeare’s works.

Students will be assigned pages from the classics, which might include “Macbeth,” “Hamlet” and the time-honored teen favorite, “Romeo and Juliet.” But if they want to read them in their entirety, they will likely have to do it on their own time.

School district officials said they redesigned their instructional guides for teachers because of revised state teaching standards and a new set of state exams that cover a vast array of books and writing styles.

“It was also in consideration of the law,” said school district spokeswoman Tanya Arja, referring to the newly expanded Parental Rights in Education Act. The measure, promoted and signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis, tells schools to steer clear of content and class discussion that is sexual in nature unless it is related to a standard, such as health class.

 

Call this just an odd series of coincidences:

All the work was reportedly assigned to one lawyer from the firm, George Meros, who counseled the Florida state government as an outside adviser.

Meros’s son, Nick Meros, is currently DeSantis’s deputy general counsel.

In August 2020, George Meros left the firm. Since then, it has not signed any new contracts with state agencies, according to state data reviewed by the outlet."
