It's called The Idol. I watched a couple of episodes. Not only was it not as graphic as I expected, I didn't find the characters or story interesting either. So I can't recommend it on either front, lol.

I think I missed the last season or so, but I thought Euphoria was actually pretty good.

Thanks - stayed very far away from that one. Bad reviews, a lot of reported sleaze in production, plus Depp family. As I told my wife, if I could remove it from even appearing on Max as available, we would. Righteous Gemstones is out now - very good.

Yep - I noted something similar re: Hate crime data a while back. FL reporting was not just spotty; it was minimal.

FAMU students with class action suit against the state. Less support per student than the other land grant (UF) and allowing FSU to open 40 programs in direct competition with same town college.

FAMU students are suing Florida government over funding gaps (nbcnews.com)

A Florida judge, for now, is allowing a class-action lawsuit to go forward that accuses the state of discriminating against a historically Black university while prioritizing its largest public university, which is predominantly white. Judge Robert L. Hinkle of the Northern District of Florida heard oral arguments Thursday in the first court test for a class-action lawsuit filed in September. He dismissed the state’s request to dismiss the suit, but did ask for revisions.

The six students at Florida A&M who filed the suit claim that the University of Florida receives a larger state appropriation per student than A&M. The complaint says that over 33 years, from 1987 to 2020, that shortfall amounted to approximately $1.3 billion, though the two schools share the distinction of being the state’s only two public land-grant colleges.

A 2022 study by Forbes found that Florida A&M (FAMU) received $2,600 less per student than the University of Florida in 2020. And the school relies more on state funding than its white counterpart, according to Forbes. Last year, The New York Times reported that FAMU’s football players, the Rattlers, must contend with poor practice equipment and overwhelmed staff spread thin while advising students.

Among other complaints, the suit also accuses the state of allowing Florida State University, also in Tallahassee, to duplicate more than 40 FAMU programs, making it difficult for FAMU to attract potential students through its fields of study.

another day, another desi law ruled unconstitutional

pretty damning statements in ruling re: Florida inability to make laws that are constitutional

Federal court blocks Florida election law | The Hill

In a 58-page ruling, U.S. District Judge Mark Walker agreed with the plaintiffs that the new state law is unconstitutional, saying that implementing restrictions on third-party voter registration organizations violates the Constitution.

SB 7050, signed into law by Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) in May, includes a ban on noncitizens participating in registering votes. Organizations could face a $50,000 fine for each noncitizen person who “collects” or “handles” voter registration forms on the organization’s behalf.

“Florida may, of course, regulate elections, including the voter registration process,” Walker said in his ruling. “Here, however, the challenged provisions exemplify something Florida has struggled with in recent years; namely, governing within the bounds set by the United States Constitution.”

sunshine law, nope, not for desi. least transparent guvnr of Florida...EVER

'Never seen anything like it': Watchdogs consider DeSantis Florida’s 'least transparent' governor (msn.com)

In an article published by NBC News' website on Independence Day 2023, reporter Lewis Kamb stresses that DeSantis, according to government watchdog groups, has a troubling history of using "executive privilege to "keep records hidden."

As governor, Kamb observes, DeSantis has "routinely stonewalled the release of public records" and "approved a slew of new legal exceptions aimed at keeping more information out of the public eye."

Kamb reports, "DeSantis, a Harvard-educated lawyer and former U.S. attorney, is the only Florida governor known to use 'executive privilege' to keep records hidden, transparency advocates and experts said. His travel records, previously under scrutiny by the media, are now secret, thanks to a new legal exemption — one of a record number created in 2023 by the Republican-led (Florida State) Legislature and approved by the governor."

The NBC News reporter adds, "DeSantis also has fought to conceal information about some of the most significant events during his tenure, including withholding COVID infection data and blocking release of records about the controversial relocation of dozens of migrants to Martha's Vineyard, legal filings show."

He is a bigot at heart, and a bigot in soul. He does not try to hide his hatred and bigotry. He is open about it, his policies drip on it, and he makes no qualms about it.

My goodness, his recent “attack” ad against Trump, where he openly attacks Trump merely for being supportive of the gay community, provides the final answer to any question of doubt.

His supporters apologize for it, try and explain it away, and even deny it despite every objective evidence before their eyes, but every action he takes exemplifies his absolute bigotry.

I've always found the argument against "cramming [wokeness/lgbtq/etc] down our throats" to be disingenuous, if not troublesome. From the piece:

Another popular backlash trope of segregationists was the fear that “the civil rights planners hope to force their ideas down the throats of the people of the nation,” as the Citizens’ Council claimed in March 1956. Arkansas Gov. Orval Faubus also condemned the federal government for “cramming integration down our throats” during the Little Rock crisis of 1957.

    Ran into this today.

Florida schools remove books by John Milton and restrict Shakespeare

Over 100 have been removed from school shelves, teacher says

Over 150 books have been removed from a large, Orlando-area Florida school district, including classics like The Scarlet Letter, Paradise Lost, and The Invisible Man, as school officials review materials for sexual content under the state’s restrictive book ban laws.

Universities starting to see signs of difficulty in recruiting with new state laws. I’m not certain those who passed the law don’t see this as a feature rather than a bug

Among the hundreds of messages sent to the Board of Governors in recent months was an email from a finance professor at the University of Central Florida who wrote to say his department lost a candidate over concerns about tenure.

A University of Florida employee reported giving tours to a half dozen prospective hires, all of whom “expressed mixed feelings about moving to Florida in the current political climate.”

The African American studies department at UF made nine offers while trying to fill three positions. None accepted.

A report from the American Association of University Professors pointed to a law school position that couldn’t be filled and said some candidates were turning down Florida offers with nothing else lined up.

Are Florida laws chasing university faculty away? Some see a ‘brain drain.’

Yep, this has been an ongoing issue due to DeSantis and the Republican Party. I can tell you that if I ever decided to try and become a law professor, there is zero chance I'd do it at a public university in this state, not even at UF, despite my love for the school. It's sad that these assholes are destroying our state's great higher-education system just to score some political points with the rubes.

Remember the weird Rambo Ron video?

In an ad rivaling Donald Trump’s pudding-gate attack, Ron DeSantis shared the latest bizarre campaign video to come from the GOP party. The anti-LGBTQ ad, which was rife with images of shirtless men and murderous cinema characters, was denounced by Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy and producers on Wednesday for using show footage that was “obtained without permission or official license.”

“On behalf of the partners of Peaky Blinders – Steven Knight, Cillian Murphy, Caryn Mandabach Productions, Tiger Aspect Productions and Baniay Rights – we confirm the footage of Tommy Shelby’s character used within the video posted by Ron DeSantis’ campaign was obtained without permission of official license,” the statement read. “We do not support nor endorse the vide’s narrative and strongly disapprove of the use of the content in this manner.”
