13 mil a year for an entire roster would be very good news. Many teams should be able to do that if they are selling out 90k in stadiums and collecting huge tv contracts. I realize that it’s a different stream of money and the schools take the entire pie but as a sport, it’s generating plenty to maintain itself if that’s the case. A star qb in the nfl gets 50 mil a year so in comparison, 13 mil for an entire roster at a premier organization is a steal of a deal in a comparative business model.

I think you'd be surprised to see how much weird old dudes with no association to a team will pay to get better 18 year olds to play for said team. Having millions of dollars isn't predicated on being a normal human being.

It's also odd to me that buying a championship is a thing that matters. Why not just buy themselves old super bowl rings on eBay or something.

I never saw anything to back that claim up. Just a bunch of hacks that repeatedly report fake news parroting it.

Allegedly, but I still find that figure very hard to believe. My guess is some of these wild numbers being discussed are just a bunch of smoking mirrors to try to get other teams to over pay.

He won all bit one of those games correct? Against the same team CJ stroud couldn't beat either?

Actually UF wasn't and that's why he got the AXe. Dude overpriced himself out of market value and he became "not worth it"

A big concern for me are schools like FSU that don't have the money to even fund stadium renovations and used taxpayer money from the State to help complete the stadium. I would not put it past them to funnel taxpayer money into the NIL program to pay players.

Correct on both counts. Still has nothing to do with him being average in those games. OSU's defense giving up almost 10 fewer points per game this year is a much more significant reason they won the same number of games.

Inevitable conclusion to the current issue. No one is happy with this current every 6 months everyone is a free agent cluster. Only reason they have NIL value is because of who they play for, no need for the current song and dance being done.

That's assuming all of the NIL is reported and is audited.

Seems like if it wasn’t that would be an issue like an employer not reporting salary for staff.
Wonder if they get a 1099…

For any remotely significant amount of money, you would assume the NIL entity would be reporting and sending out 1099’s. They’d be on the hook for the taxes themselves otherwise. Wouldn’t make much sense for them not to, assuming it’s all above board.

Good point and question. But, I was thinking more of the low wage summer job with a quiet 100k bonus that never makes it to the UAA. How do you know that's not happening?

Sure it does. I can’t imagine having that kind of cash to just slide under the table.

Moving that kind of cash around under the table is a good way to end up in jail.

If you were going to give someone 100k and it was legal to do so, why wouldn’t you keep it above board and make them eat the taxes? Why would you eat the taxes for them? There’s no reason to hide it. Just make them do something for the money and you’re good.

    So have drug dealers.

It’s above board now though, and much bigger numbers. There’s no reason to hide it.

*the bigger numbers in the old system were generally done with jobs and houses for the parents, donations to churches, etc. The tax implications still got moved. The money just went to handlers instead of the kids themselves.
