I don't think I've ever seen a worse 9 game stretch of pitching in the SEC for the Gators. 73 IP - 87 runs, 95 hits, 57 BB, 20 HR. Only three pitchers have a conference ERA under 9.0. McNeillie (5.79), King (6.08), and Phillpot (8.64) My suggestions. Peterson, King, TBA for the rotation. TBA is hopefully Coppolla. But use Barlow or Barberi till he's heathy. Both have had some solid starts, but been shakier in relief. Use Phillpot, Clemente, and Biemiller for short middle relief appearances. All have had dominating innings to only blow up in their 2nd or 3rd inning. Use McNeillie as closer. I think he has the best makeup for it. He closed a few games last year. Has the best strikeout stuff. His walk rate is too high, but hope the pressure increases his focus. What does sully do?
Seems like the last few years pitching has been our weak spot. Honestly, you cannot go very far without top pitching and we've been more of a miss than hit. You need competent starters and relief pitchers to make a run for the trophy. The question is, are we lousy with with evaluations, development, or has complacency in the coaching staff taken over to the point they are not on top of things. I'm not saying we are entirely void of really good pitchers, it's just we don't have enough of them and with a program like UF that should not be the case. Seems every year we are in the top 10 of recruiting and yet can't seem to find competent pitching. This year may be the worst. The question I have is why does this keep happening? Can't believe it's all about NIL money or the lack of it.
Just my opinion here but ANYTIME regardless of how highly rated they may be freshmen at the D-1 level are raw talent being exposed to the biggest stage and brightest spotlight they’ve ever been in—it doesn’t matter who they are. To get them conference game ready is a process and usually they will get bloodied in the process. Everyone answers to time and experience. Faedo, Singer, Dunning, Kowar—they were all exposed to the process.
Starting badly against Tn and dawgs sucks, but both were very good and I struggled to separate their strong performances from Gator weaknesses. Miss also is pretty good, but the three games were much more competitive, Yes, Gator pitching struggled against good Miss hitting, but Gators beat up Miss pitching pretty well, too. I agree with the assertion above that "Honestly, you cannot go very far without top pitching..." But, finishing second in '23 and third in '24 are within my working definition of "going very far." We Gator fans are well known for having our hair catch fire easily, but it still is early for that. This season will be a battle, but year after year, Gators battle through adversity pretty well. I, for one, continue on, blindly optimistic.
I think I heard the Ole Piss broadcast saying umps are being graded more so on the strike zone this year so they are cracking down on what they count as strikes? Not sure if I was dreaming or not... I agree asking freshman pitchers to come into this conference is a big ask. and there are bumps along the road. I liked '23 where everyone knew their role. I think with Sully, you only have so long to gain his circle of trust. Luke Hey wAS AWESOME this weekend. He is the leader of this team imho. I do think we need a new pitching coach( not sure what Kopp car does exactly) regardless. I wish we could get the guy that helped LP but that is not gonna happen. Praying PC comes back healthy and strong!!!
