White House bars AP reporter from Oval Office because of AP style policy on 'Gulf of America'

NEW YORK (AP) — The White House blocked an Associated Press reporter from an event in the Oval Office on Tuesday after demanding the news agency alter its style on the Gulf of Mexico, which President Donald Trump has ordered renamed the Gulf of America.

The reporter, whom the AP would not identify, tried to enter the White House event as usual Tuesday afternoon and was turned away. Later, a second AP reporter was barred from a late-evening event in the White House Diplomatic Room.

The highly unusual ban, which Trump administration officials had threatened earlier Tuesday unless the AP changed the style on the Gulf, could have constitutional free-speech implications.

Control of what the free press publishes is important to all the best fascists. Watch for a "new" government press agency headed by Bannon to become the official Pravda.

Isn't it kind of disrespectful to wear a hat in the Oval Office, especially when standing right by the President's desk? Unless, of course, you literally wear the hat in the Oval Office, and you're letting the President sit at your desk.

    OP should provide a comment.

The WH not allowing the AP into a press briefing is just being petty. The US calls it the Gulf of America now. Who cares. The rest of the globe calls it Gulf of Mexico. Who cares. The AP’s gets paid to be in that briefing and report. If the WH doesn’t allow questions from certain news outlets, that tells me more about the WH than the AP.

The irony that Elon talked about unelected bureaucrats while he himself is an unelected bureaucrat.

How is my post off topic when the photo in the link is of Musk wearing a hat in the Oval Office? I should not comment on a disgusting photo (including a hat or not) in a link?

Now Maga is turning on a conservative group (FIRE)
Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression
    it recently supported :
"In a February 11 post on X, formerly Twitter, FIRE argued, "Punishing journalists for not adopting state-mandated terminology is an alarming attack on press freedom. That's viewpoint discrimination, and it's unconstitutional. President Trump has the authority to change how the U.S. government refers to the Gulf. But he cannot punish a news organization for using another term. The role of our free press is to hold those in power accountable, not to act as their mouthpiece. Any government efforts to erode this fundamental freedom deserve condemnation."

MAGA Republicans were quick to attack FIRE, defending the barring of the AP reporter. And a group that many right-wing pundits applauded in the past for taking on progressive and liberal college administrators is now being slammed by Trump supporters."

It's simple. Trump fired the people around him until they were all filled with ass kissers. He is looking to do that with the press too. A fat dumb man surrounds himself with people who tell him he is 220lbs and amazingly smart. lol. This makes for good TV.

Even the Mods (really a Mod) start threads with "this is good", "this is bad", "this is interesting". Nothing is no worse than that. But I think his comment is the last line of the post.

Thank you. I should have compared the quote to the article to know the OP’s point. That was me being lazy.

Someone has JBDS (Joe Biden Derangement Syndrome). Even after he has become a footnote in history apparently some MAGATs continue to be obsessed with Biden.

It’s the Trump White House so they probably weren’t aware there was a 1st Amendment.

This is a bigger battle for this WH/trump. Attacking the media. It’s textbook for authoritarianism. See Putin’s control over Russian media. Or other authoritarians in history.

while in my opinion it is a waste of time to ban them- the WH is free to ban whomever they want in the press room

So when the felon bans all media sources that do not print what he chooses... that will be fine as well?
