West Virginia Bills would put ridiculous restrictions on Trans people

The cruelty is the point, as Serwer perfectly observed

I don’t even know if it’s the intent, though it’s certainly the result. I think it’s more about playing to a completely unjustifiable paranoia in their base. They can’t bring coal jobs back, but they can stoke divisions through fear.
The ironic thing is that West Virginians were the liberal ones when they split from VA in the 1860’s. I spend a fair amount of time in the state, it’s sad to see what they’ve become.

The law about certain materials or media showcasing trans people is ridiculous. I agree with keeping some of it out of schools but if you can't watch Mrs. Doubtfire... that's insane.

I do not see nothing wrong with limiting the age to at least 18. We don't allow tattoos or smoking until 18 for a reason.

Then you also have states like Maine which want to introduce a bill allowing the state to take kids away from parents so they can get sex change procedures...

Why do we live in such crazy times...

Maine’s position seems extreme, as parents should have a say (it’s not the same as a crazed parent withholding cancer treatment or “putting it in gods hands”, which would be more like child neglect - obviously warranting state intervention to get them proper healthcare). Maybe in cases where it’s medically supported a 16 year old has to emancipate themselves and sue their parents, and that can all be litigated. But the state can’t just “take” custody to override the parent.

But I think the state outlawing this type of medical care is also extreme. Even for those <18. I think that basically for the same reason as above, because parents should have a say, and maybe there are cases <18 where it’s medically warranted. If doctors and parent agree on a best course, it’s not up to a government to dictate.

As I’ve mentioned on here before, I employ the Baptists and Bootleggers perspective, which are the two groups that fought for liquor regulations. Through this lens, every movement includes both ideologically pure and impure actors. I have a friend who I’ve recently realized is against gay and trans rights. As far as I can tell, he harbors no ill will against these people. He simply thinks these are damaging lifestyles, and the lives of the children today would be hurt by the proliferation of trans culture among the youth. I could see him getting on board with laws like this, thinking that trans culture is dangerous and the job of the government is to protect its citizens.

I have no doubt that many legitimately oppose both, mostly for moral or religious reasons. I feel like even many who are fine with homosexuality think the trans movement has gone too far but that nearly everyone who opposes homosexuality also opposes gender transitioning. The folks in the latter camp, IMO, are focused on the trans issue because they've mostly given up on homosexuality and the trans issue also polls better politically. Having said that, I'm not even sure what a generic "gay" lifestyle is supposed to be.

Good stuff. I just think that no matter what one thinks about some of the changes, and it took me a while to be a bit more comfortable with some of them, it just is and will be regardless of what the generation now in power thinks they can do to somehow quash it.

And yet so much public policy energy and legislation is performed thinking that a change driven by the next generation that we don't feel comfortable with can somehow simply be stopped in its tracks and reversed due to our discomfort. And mind you, I'm not suggesting that discomfort is wrong - just that it's both futile and cruel to try to enforce. And I just don't get the energy over what is undisputedly a very limited impact issue.

What’s your definition of normal? It’s 2024 my man, time to get with the times. Drag queens and gay people have been in society for eons. Seems normal to me.

"No this is how a society protects children. The Big Gov lovers are on the left not on the right. Nice try. Laws to protect children are not Big Gov."

Oh it is? Label an entire group as groomers & then pass a law keeping them away from kids & say it is to protect the kids.

Jews are groomers therefore government should protect children from them.
Blacks are groomers therefore government should protect children from them.
Christians are groomers therefore government should protect children from them.
Women are groomers therefore government should protect children from them.

btw, I bet each of those 4 groups have caused more harm to kids than drag queens.

Oh & why we're at it, I suppose you are in favor of the government banning kids from football, skiing hunting, living in a house with a firearm etc. You know, to protect the kids.

I haven’t read the bill, but imagine trying to enforce it.
Defining and even identifying a transgender person will be impossible.
If a man puts on eyeliner, is that enough? How about if a woman wears a suit and tie?
And what about the people who have transitioned where you can’t even easily tell? Are they gonna require background checks at libraries?

Drag queens are NOT normal. And do not mix them in with the LGB community... I have decent respect for almost all of them.

Whatever you want to believe, I can’t control that. It is ironic, however, that you and your party always label them as groomers, and yet they’re never the ones found doing the grooming, and rather it’s individuals almost exclusively in the GOP or those who vote and lean right. Interesting.

Deal. Lets remove both from the eyes of kids. Glad we agree. :)

That said, if the bill is as vague as advertised it will not pass the constitutional test.
