We are 4th in the nation in penalty yards

118th last year. That's damn near 4th too..... from the bottom

 

I understand you were joking, but I want to point out that in the future when we get that level of talent again we will be able to overcome those penalties. Our margin for error right now is razor thin, and has been for quite some time.

 

People post like football is rocket science. Newsflash: It ain't. Sorry if you're bored but a one-point win is a win.

Spurrier's teams were always very penalized. They were also very good. Doesn't mean we couldn't have been even better with a few less pivotal infractions.

Also, it's not necessarily the number of penalties or the yardage associated with penalties that hurts; it's when they happen. On the flip side, if you're putting half-a-hundred on teams in their own stadium with your aggressiveness, penalties aren't going to move the needle.

 

Sure that occasionally happens. But that's anecdotal, on the whole penalty yardage generally doesn't correlate to wins/losses.

Stats like turnover margin and passing yards per attempt have strong correlations.

 

Penalty yardage may not be an indicator, but number of penalties certainly is, unless you are so good that you can overcome them. Since most teams aren't Bama, Georgia, or the teams that UF had that won championships, they probably are like the 9 false starts against Kentucky in 2021 which were devastating.

 

It is, but start winning big against traditional SEC foes and then we can judge the effectiveness of Napier's system regarding penalties. Spurs knew the deal in the SEC. Its why he made sure we scored enough points to make sure the incompetent (biased?) SEC refs couldn't screw our team over. Tighter games mean more opportunity for a rotten call to impact the outcome of the game. Both Muschamp and Zook could tell you something about that.

 

I don’t get all the snark generated towards @DawgFanFromAlabam. He merely made an observation which is factual. Nothing wrong with that. It’s appropriate to discuss how the current situation differs from those championship teams.

It has been pointed out those championship teams were loaded with championship talent. They were also high scoring, big play offenses, backed up by very good defenses.

In our current situation, where we do not have nearly as much margin for error, becoming one of the least penalized teams is definitely a bonus for this year. As pointed out, it shows the players are listening to the coaching and trying to follow through with it. This is a good thing. Hopefully it leads to all-around better execution.

I know we would all love the high flying offenses of SOS and UM to return, but that might not be what’s in store for the near future.

 

Nice stat. fsu, tennessee, bama well below 100th. Tennessee seems able to make up for penalty yards with explosive plays.

Exactly, explosive plays are the key to success. It generates confidence in your team and it demoralizes the other team at the same time. Eliminates the importance of penalties and most of all, a high score makes the opposing team 1 dimensional making it easier to defend. Have to be up by a lot for that to happen but it certainly helps a defense. Ask Spurrier and Meyer.

 

I’m not feeling the love…

 

All of ours have been since. Meyer and especially Muschamp made it worse. The latter literally spittling in their faces while screaming at the top of his lungs. At least Meyer, Mac and Mullen worked the refs a bit.

Politics and personal feelings are involved. I believe this is another long-running problem Napier is working to fix. We may already be seeing the positive results.

 

Okay, let me help. We are aiming for the "Boy Scout of the Year" award and we have missed it for quite a few years. Kind of like the time between your NCs.

We are looking for some hope for the future. This is one way. That is all.

 

We'd probably have a few more penalties if our DBs played anywhere near the receivers.

Being strongly penalized often go hand in hand with winning. This is true. Seriously. But…

Not saying our penalties are making us good.

 

It would be an interesting dive to see how many of his losses could be directly tied to penalties.
