This ^ You couldn’t paint a more challenging scenario for a new coach if you tried. To not give Billy 4 years would not only be grossly unfair, it would be the height of stupidity. Let’s hope he wins 7 or 8 and protects us from ourselves
Confession: I was still on Team Zook after Starkville. And Muschamp. And Mac. And Mullen...nah, I was off the Mullen bandwagon. I don't believe in quick fixes. I know they happen. But lots of things happen, in all combinations of "win fast, sustain", "win fast, fail" (Chizik), "lose fast, win later", etc. One constant: fans discount the downsides of the treadmill and churn. Wild-ass guess: Billy was promised a no-treadmill. Build the thing which builds the thing which builds a winner. A program-builder. I admire that approach, especially when it comes with early setbacks. I hope we stay the course.
Those things have been attributed to Mullen by no one. It’s the lack of upperclassmen talent from Mullen that is the issue.
Bobbybaker86 just posted the aTm depth chart. Our veterans that transferred are running 3rd and 4th string. Our talent had never been so low in my lifetime. 40 some years.
Exactly, and you don’t beat upperclassmen power five teams with freshmen and sophmores. A backbone built of transfers isn’t the way to go either. Portal is for filling holes, not building a team. We have almost nothing left as far as upperclassmen and they should be our leaders. Lagways second or third year will be when our hs talent starts to show itself or not. FSU just got beat the hell up by a tech oline that has continuity. Our line is sketchy as hell and doesn’t have much history together. If they can be an average sec line this year, that’ll be an accomplishment in my book.
Honestly if our lines have taken any step forward I think we have a good enough mix of young talent and transfer talent to win now. Not that it's ideal but we have pretty good continuity at the skill positions on offense and an ok mix on defense with better coaching but the same scheme. Not ideal but doable. The main concern remains offensive and defensive lines which truthfully, we have underperformed relative to our needs so far. Hopefully that changes. Back to the initial point. It's crazy that Scooby and Jaydon were in heavy rotation and we had to rely on them as front line defenders and here they are riding the pine elsewhere.
We just lacked talent period. We are middle of the pack and will have to fight tooth and nail every week. Our opponents are in the same boat.
The equivalent of farting in a grocery store aisle and then leaving before anyone noticed... Basically his Gator tenure and plan to leave for the NFL. He didn't leave the aisle in time and everyone caught a whiff...
Don't forget that A&M was using that NIL before there was NIL and even though Jimbo is an a$$hat and a lot of the top-rated recruits left, they have consistently out-recruited UF. They have a lot of talent. This new coach seems to know what he is doing since he managed to win at Duke, so lets hope it takes some time for that team and system to gel and we get the W in the Swamp early in the year. Scooby and Jaydon were probably exposed when they went up against more highly rated talent.
For those who think supporting Napier and thinking maybe he corrected some things means we think he is a sure thing or that its ALL mullens fault, this perspective about fsu was probably my biggest gripe last year regarding Napier making overly confident comments about our defense in pre season.
Don’t know the answer to that yet. Seriously, though — as in, in all [stink]ing gravitas — publicly begging Dan Mullen to come back and hiring someone to recruit for him looks like a better plan than this.
