So what is Putin really upset about? This is what the news isn't telling you. UN Security Resolution 2202 that the Ukraine failed to follow through on in 2015. UN Security Council Resolution 2202 To get a better understanding about the whole issue Elijah Schaffer interviews George Szamuely (25:05 - 43:22) Too say the least it is one hell of a convoluted situation and whether we want to admit it or not Putin has a legitimate beef. Ukraine never held up to the deal. Given the facts this also brings into question why China and others are not happy with NATO. Stab people in the back enough they get upset. Interesting opinion from UChicago Political Science Professor back in 2015... This was spoken before Trump. This was spoken before Biden. So, he has no dog in the fight between Trump and Biden. He blames NATO expansion for the conflict in Ukraine. Trump didn't want to expand NATO and wasn't all that supportive of NATO because he saw NATO as an outdated relic of a dead Cold War era. Hence why he didn't have much conflict with Putin. Biden has a different agenda regarding Ukraine and NATO, which explains why the conflict escalated during the Biden Presidency and not during Trump's presidency. When Biden and Putin went to the negotiating table had Biden dropped the agenda to add Ukraine to NATO this conflict probably doesn't happen.
Which, if you really want to use this as a pretext, would be resolved by Russia taking the 2 areas in question, being *actual* peacekeepers, bringing forth a motion to the UN and going from there. Taking the lands would be wrong to begin with but they'd have this so-called slight to hide behind. But once again, in his many insane and nonsensical justifications, he doesn't want that resolution. He wants to take the whole Ukraine.....oops, save it from its Nazi leadership, since obviously their JEWISH leader is a Nazi. Your excuses for Putin invading, killing, destabilizing, and potentially unleashing radioactive waste from history's biggest nuclear disaster, not to mention threatening the use of nukes in COMPLETE violation of the NPT they themselves confounded...is that NATO expanded. That's it? Seriously? So no country on Earth can decide whether or not to join a military alliance? Especially when a country like RUSSIA is their neighbor? The concept of grasping at straws comes to mind here.
video of a Russian convoy said to be 3 miles long, consisting of fuel trucks, resupply trucks, and tanks 40 miles NE of Kyiv . Looks target rich for aerial assets. Wish Ukraine had more.
Congratulations- Putin's now made NATO stronger and ADDED members, since Finland, Sweden, & Kosovo want to join. He's also now shown the absolute NEED for NATO combined with countries like Germany now greatly increasing military spending. You said this was before Trump & Biden. Curious to hear his current stake given what's happened this week.
He did bring up the motion to the UN on several occasions and nothing was done. This gets to the root of why Ukraine was never admitted to NATO. I'll be clear in Putin's mind this is justification for what he is doing. This is why we get a thumb in the eye.
I'm all in favor of hearing opposing sides because I have no doubt the media usually comes with a slant. That said, Icequeen brought up some valid points and given Putins history with his neighbors, Russian justification falls flat. They are the neighborhood bully and have been for a long time.
Would you be OK with China making alliances with Canada, Mexico, and Cuba and then building Chinese military bases in the Caribbean and on North American soil? That is the equivalent action from Putin's POV. We'd be going nuts and rightfully so if China built military bases in Cuba, Mexico, and Canada.
"Well, this is a bad situation, but is there a way that we can make this much worse?" "I've got it, cut off all foreign investment as long as the Russian government is the Russian government." "I think we are done here, good job"
Yeah, that's a shame that Russia treated their "allies" like garbage and then lost the Cold War. I'm pretty sure they've done a great job alienating Europe and the US on their own. Now they are the outcast on the playground instead of the bully.
Would that then give the US the green light to invade every single location those bases were built, bomb them, kill civilians, and warn anyone that didn't like it including China that any aid given is an act of war and we'll nuke the areas being taken over plus anyone that helps them? We could go nuts, complain about it...stop trade/do sanctions. But his claim is that those 2 regions want to be liberated and part of Russia. So again, if that's the pretext, why take the whole Ukraine? Ukraine even said it would discuss neutrality and Putin STILL went through with all this. So sorry, that possible sliver of an excuse won't work. By that token every NATO country had the right to invade every Warsaw pact country because they certainly didn't want to be under Soviet control and posed a security threat to their neighbors.
And FWIW, when rumors surfaced of Finland and Sweden being interested in joining NATO the reaction was the same...threats of retaliation. Putin is concerned about US military presence on his border and in his region. There was no conflict during the Trump presidency because Trump was not pro-NATO expansion like the Democrats are. They backed Putin into a corner, which is why he attacked. Biden backed a bear into the corner, and the bear attacked. That is Biden's fault. It doesn't excuse Putin's actions, but the way Biden and the Democrats played this is pretty foolish.
Presently properly disposing of RS vodka. Pre apologies for any extra moderation needed this evening.
