As noted by several replies, those generals do NOT look happy. Nukes will hopefully be a tipping point and they refuse/take him out.
For those against US/NATO getting involved, how does the possible use of nukes affect your opinion? If nothing else shows he's unstable he's threatening to use nukes against a country that houses...Chernobyl. And Trump & others praise his "intelligence".
*sigh* US official: Russian invasion of Ukraine risks release of dangerous pathogens - Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists "The Russian invasion of Ukraine may put at risk a network of US-linked labs in Ukraine that work with dangerous pathogens, said Robert Pope, the director of the Cooperative Threat Reduction Program, a 30-year-old Defense Department program that has helped secure the former Soviet Union’s weapons of mass destruction and redirect former bioweapons facilities and scientists toward peaceful endeavors."
Doesn't change it for me. We are involved at the right levels. He can threaten nukes but it changes nothing. Unless we attack Putin directly and kill him immediately the first time, he will have time to press the button. Sending in troops or air support does nothing to stop that. Putin's removal has to come from within his inner circle. It has to be swift and precise. It literally has to be a bullet to the back of the head when he least expects it. No military involvement can do that.
This video interview of Garry Kasparov probably sums up the view of most on this thread. It certainly does mine. Amanpour and Company | What is Putin’s End Game? Garry Kasparov on Russia’s Attack | Season 2022 This invasion has consequences far worse than I envisioned, say, 2 months ago.
Release of Nuclear weapons must be perceived as an attack on NATO. Nuclear fallout, reaction products, etc....will not remain contained by lines on a map. Meanwhile, I wonder if the US has dusted off some of those Permissive Action Link codes and waking up a couple of nukes over in Europe just in case?
Per CNN live recap: Ukraine has filed charges at The Hague and wants a speedy trial. Germany says it sees Putin's future goals and has now allocated emergency defense spending & vows go allocate 2% of their GDP to increase their own military capabilities. I would guess this is separate from the US bases. So now Germany is going to build up their military.
From CNN live: " Ukrainian delegation agrees to meet with Russians at Belarus border, according to President Zelensky’s office From CNN’s Tim Lister President Volodymyr Zelensky’s office said Belarus President Aleksander Lukashenko called the Ukrainian President Sunday. "The politicians have agreed that the Ukrainian delegation will meet with the Russian delegation without preconditions on the Ukrainian-Belarusian border, near the Pripyat River," his office said. "Aleksander Lukashenko has taken responsibility for ensuring that all planes, helicopters and missiles stationed on the Belarusian territory will remain on the ground during the Ukrainian delegation's travel, meeting and return." " Better be wearing body armor, streaming live body cams, etc., so Russia won't try to claim they tried to pull something. This is a change though since they wanted Ukraine to come to Minsk (deep in Belarus) & Ukraine said no.
Interesting side effect/consequence. From CNN live "Germany to construct two liquefied natural gas terminals as it looks to reduce Russian gas dependence From CNN's Chris Liakos Germany will construct two liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Sunday, pledging to do more to protect Germany’s energy supply and as it looks to reduce its Russian gas dependence. “We need to do more in order to protect energy supply of our country,” said Scholz adding “and in order to not depend on certain energy suppliers.” Germany is Russia’s biggest gas customer. CNN has previously reported that Europe relies on Russia for around 35% of its natural gas, Germany over 50%. But with the threat of supply disruption following Russia’s attack on Ukraine, Germany along with other European countries has been looking to ramp up LNG imports."
If anyone is in the US Military and can add to this, correct me if I my interpretation is wrong ( I will not be offended) or otherwise can add to this, please do: Just read something from the US Air Force. 6 US F-35A's have moved from Germany to Poland, Lithuania and Estonia. These jets have such advanced targeting electronics that they can identify targets far more accurately and at distances that F-16s and F-15s are incapable of. However, they can also share that information into the targeting systems of near-by F-16s and F-15's, making them like a mini-AWACs in the air. They are currently flying alongside the F-16s in Poland and the Baltic states on daily missions along the border ensuring no Russian incursions.
Ukraine roads company has been naughty: changing road signs to profane suggestions. Ukraine roads company removing road signs to confuse Russians Those potty-mouth Ukrainians are not going to win any Russian friends. You'd think they would start with a little bad language and work their way up to the f-word. (Note to Ukraine: this is why you can't be in NATO. There are rules for escalating the language.) This conflict appears to be getting serious.
And that’s the point. Even if Ukraine is lost, for Ukraine not to be another Czechoslovakia. The more pain that is imposed upon Russia now is to make any further actions untenable. The harder the squeeze, the more bitter the juice.
