Makes you wonder if Putin has been reluctant to overspend on the military for the past 20 years, due to the Soviet's military budget imploding the government. I'm a little surprised at their dilapidated stock, but there's been a revenue stream there. It just hasn't been siphoned by the military the way it was in the Soviet days. You would think Putin would have a near state of the art military force, but it's embarrassing what they're using.

That’s a very strange thing to write if you’ve been paying attention to Russia since Putin took power. One of the key characteristics of his regime has been increased military spending and rebuilding Russia’s armed forces since the humiliation of the First Chechen War. So we know they spent the money. The better question then would be, where did all of that money actually go? Dachas? High-end prostitution? Fast cars?

Western spending on Ukraine defense exceeds Russia’s military budget. Yet somehow Russia is in the process of destroying Ukraine’s weaponry a second time around. Beats me how. They’ve been out of missiles since March. All of their tanks are out of commission. And they’ve lost more troops than they’ve inserted in theatre. I still think it’s wolverines.

It wasn’t increased military spending if it went to prostitution was it? A lot of corruption there, so money falling in the wrong hands is certainly plausible.

Putin pretty much solved his oligarch problem. Presently, money falling into the wrong hands defines the black hole that is Ukraine.

A bone for hungry dogs ...

The BBC claims to have confirmed 9,331 Russian military deaths. This includes combat troops and their equivalent of our national guard ...

The Ukrainian government count is 11,461 childrenknown by name and taken without families to Russia or Russian-controlled areas. President Volodymyr Zelensky told the G20 summit that there are “tens of thousands” more who are known about only indirectly or with less detail.

“He was kidnapped,” she told me. “He was taken forcibly.”

good news on Russian economy. Its decline is continuing. It didn’t drop as fast as originally expected but now looking more dire.

“For months, Putin claimed that the “economic blitzkrieg” against Russia had failed, but Western sanctions imposed over the invasion of Ukraine are digging ever deeper into Russia’s economy, exacerbating equipment shortages for its army and hampering its ability to launch any new ground offensive or build new missiles, economists and Russian business executives said.”

Russia is out of missiles. But when it has them they’re all shot down. Simultaneously, the entire Ukraine energy grid is exploding.

At some point, if you’re the dictator of a once world superpower, you’re making sure those billions of rubles are being spent on actual military hardware. Unless Putin is a bumbling idiot when it comes to building a military. This is a nation which closely censors its media, rigs its elections and has a vast spying network within its borders. Surely he had enough control to make sure rubles were being spent on actual military. But I digress as I know the corruption there runs deep.

Saw a map last night on CNN. Has Ukraine actually begun a counteroffensive on the ground in Crimea? The map made it seem like they have. I can’t find anything about it online.
