That is what public is led to believe no one has any validation to the conversations that took place or what was said between the two leaders. As for the 2022 Winter Olympics COVID was still an issue at the time and attendance of spectators was horrible to say the very least. As for the timing of the invasion if the issue was wait until after the Olympics the question is why? Russia could certainly have invaded while the games were taking place and given what the public and Europeans nations were warned of the invasion was a foregone conclusion before the Olympics even started.
I suspect that China and Russia have never been closer. The US strategy to weaken a Russia, cleave it from China; so as to focus on China ... an apparent back-fire.

The hundred million are mostly ineligible to serve in the army, or can't afford to leave. If the Russians were enthusiastic about the war, these hundreds of thousands would be in training right now getting ready to continue the invasion. Since most of the people evacuating have some money to stay somewhere overseas, this could be the second great brain-drain to hit Russia this year (the first happened after the economic sanctions). It won't be long before the average Russian's shoe size exceeds his I.Q. And this exodus won't just affect the army directly in Ukraine. It will also reduce the number of young men available to work in the factories making war materiel, forcing Putin to buy more and more externally from places like North Korea. There is no evidence that 100 million Russians support this war. Only that they are (mostly) not likely to have to serve, and are probably hesitant to speak up about their disgust with the failure of the war. Some are genuinely worried about the failure of Putin and the army to complete the job.
I just don't see any major involvement from China in Russia's decision to invade Ukraine. They buy oil, but so does India and a few other countries. Xi has provided general verbal support, but that's it. China has not provided weapons (that I know of) or troops.

Wow. You are naive. When a communist country asks you if you support the dictator's war, the correct answer is "YES!" Any lack of enthusiasm in your response could be grounds for an investigation and a possible trip to Siberia. If you are not smart enough to realize this, you probably should not participate in this discussion. Actually, several Americans have gone to Ukraine and fought Russia, without any official support from the U.S. government. A few have been captured.

Slight difference in the questions. The author’s question is what should the U.S. do to deter the use of nuclear weapons, and I agree with the assertions therein. My question was over what to actually do in the largely unthinkable event. All of us here have the luxury of saying “Too difficult to contemplate” or “Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.” The President does not have that luxury, of course. We need a plan, not merely another Jake Sullivan Special: “plan to plan but hope in the interim.”
