Still love those, even 20 years later. That one is particularly appropriate.

I think Putin's strategy even if Russia is losing on the battlefield is the infliction of intolerable economic pain on Ukraine as well as the infliction of pain on the countries of the EU to dissuade them from continuing support of Ukraine.

I agreed. But it seems we have. I know a big portion of what we provided is economic aid.

“Since Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine in February, the U.S. government has pumped more money and weapons into supporting the Ukrainian military than it sent in 2020 to Afghanistan, Israel, and Egypt combined — surpassing in a matter of months three of the largest recipients of U.S. military aid in history.”

We have met that moral obligation. But Tooze is referring to non military economic aid

Non military aid is a component of what we provided. Older article below but it breaks out non military aid.

But I agree, if we don’t support them it could cost us much more later.

“The United States will send an additional $5.5 billion in aid to Ukraine, made up of $4.5 billion in budgetary support and $1 billion in military assistance,…….

The $4.5 billion budgetary grant will fund urgent government needs including payments for pensions, social welfare and healthcare costs”

U.S. to send Ukraine $5.5 billion in new fiscal, military aid

I’d be interested to hear about these correlation of forces. At best, Russia entered Ukraine Ukraine with a 1:3 disadvantage.

If that’s true, then you were even more stupid to invade than anyone thought.

LOL. You don’t have civilians in Ukraine. Ukraine has not only the right but the duty to take back lands stolen since 2014. If you’re crying the beloved country now about how unfair it is for you to be losing a war that you started, unprovoked, then you’re going to be comedy gold over the next couple of months.

Let’s review: You were supposed to have air and maritime superiority in a couple of days. Still don’t. Supposed to capture Kyiv and Odessa in a couple of weeks. Moves already abandoned. Supposed to have already linked up on the ground with Russian forces in Transnistria, postured to “liberate” Moldova. Fantasy Land at this point. After wisely changing the strategy to a broad front, supposed to have completed the conquest of the Left Bank by winter, postured to take bridgeheads for a second push on Kyiv in the spring. Doesn’t look good, does it? Supposed to have easily repelled any Ukrainian offensives and be postured for immediate counterattacks. Doesn’t seem to be happening either.

And that emotional little girl you call a czar hasn’t yet truly lost it and expanded a losing war, the historical tendency for all despots. Better hope the adults in Moscow put him in timeout before he does. Because you will never be more sorry in your entire life than if you have to face NATO air and sea power on top of the full plate you have in Ukraine.

After Kursk and Normandy, the Third Reich still held a lot of land that wasn’t theirs. Even Hitler was not fool enough at that point to think the tide had not turned.

LOL. I’ll start worrying about when our defense industry can’t keep up with any demand when we need to go beggaring munitions from North Korea.
