Very Cold War troop/equipment levels reminiscent of the large annual NATO exercises. The Reforger and the Autumn Forge series of annual NATO combined arms exercises always made the Soviets uneasy. Those exercises were held from Norway to Turkey.
Of course it's about Ukraine joining NATO. If the West shuts its door then Ukraine would have no choice but to ask for Russian help, essentially giving Putin control of the country. Why would he invade if he can control the country without firing a shot?
You conflate control of the country with NATO? Ukraine wants to join the EU. That is wholly apart from NATO and represents a high degree of economic ties to the west. The E.U. resisted because of the history of corruption. Remember the firing of Shokin? The prime mover was the EU. And, In any event, Putin wants to create a Russian Empire. NATO is just the excuse Russia offered True, joining NATO would be symptomatic of independence from Russia. But, agreeing to not join NATO would have not changed anything for Putin. Not unless Ukraine became a vassal state of Russia
Agree, Putin doesn't want Ukraine in NATO, doesn't want them in the EU, doesn't even want them to be independent but neutral. He wants total control of Ukraine.

There is no justification for Putin’s actions here. Guy’s a mass murderer, and yeah he already did this in Syria too, but the west looked the other way because it was one of those “shithole countries”. Moving into Europe obviously grabs everyone’s attention. Guy’s probably responsible for a million deaths in his 20+ years. If you think that’s a guy we should be “frienemies” with going forward then I don’t know what to say. Putin has made it impossible.
