Europe mulls turning down the heat in homes to hit Putin's bloody war - CNN

"When you turn on the heating in your home, you may not think much about where your energy comes from, let alone where the money you pay for it goes. For millions of people living in Europe, there's a good chance that money is flowing to the Russian state — much of it into President Vladimir Putin's war chest.

Russia has been building a network of natural gas pipelines throughout Europe since the 1960s. Washington has been warning its Western allies ever since that more Russian gas will only make Europeans more vulnerable to Moscow."

Agree Russians will face no consequences, other than getting to play “Who want to fight a 10 year insurgency?” after they “win”.

Not that I’m a international legal expert, but I don’t think it’s true you can only be prosecuted if on the “losing” side of a conflict. Perusing the list of people historically convicted of war-crimes, quite a few seem to be on the “winning” side.

Though it’s fair to question if the Russians will be accountable, and most likely they won’t, but if they do chemical weapons or some other atrocity like in Syria again, I think the momentum is there this time.

The U:S. has undoubtedly had individuals commit war crimes in every war we’ve ever fought, yet in many cases we barely hold them accountable ourselves, let alone turn them over to an international court. I think we should reflect some of the lack of justice/accountability on our own part. At minimum, this conversation is exactly why Trumps pardon of war criminals was despicable, just another ceding of the moral high ground which enemies of America and freedom will be able to point to out the hypocrisy.

The Arctic Ocean is getting warmer every year, opening sea lanes for more months out of the year.

I agree with you 100% on China. If there is money to be made, China will trade.

Overheard on CNN radio & trying to find it but that airbase that's being fought over? The Russians apparently took 40 civilian hostages & are holding them in a basement to keep the Ukrainians in check. Dont see it on their page however. If true, guess that's ok to some of you, you know, because the US is bad.

On the bright side they shot down a Russian airplane & a Russian helicopter.

    From CNN live

"Germany's military says more reservists are reaching out following Russia's invasion of Ukraine

From CNN's Nadine Schmidt in Berlin

Germany's armed forces (Bundeswehr) say ''an increasing number of reservists'' are coming forward to offer support for the country's military services following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

''Following the start of the war of aggression on Ukraine, an increasing number of reservists are contacting various departments of the Bundeswehr to offer their support,'' the Bundeswehr website said Friday.

''Currently, a concrete requirement for the Bundeswehr is not yet foreseeable; on the other hand, the development of the situation is characterized by high dynamics,'' the statement on the Bundeswehr website added. "

Indication of Russia's influence on our social media? Or are there other candidate causes?

What's good for the goose is good for the gander there in lies the issue. Same would apply to China if such actions were taken.

Cnn interviewed someone in the cease fire area where he said it lasted 30 minutes & Russian forces were shelling against, hitting things like busses. Said they were absolutely using the evacuation to hit more civilians on purpose.

This may be a superficial take on the class structures, but are there well known Chinese oligarchs similar to these state sanctioned Russian “billionaires”? Other than Jack Ma? Seems like when a Chinese businessman gets too big or starts “flaunting” their wealth too much to the west, the CCP cracks down on them. That may be some somewhat “for appearances”, but may also be some delusional sense of Marxist ideology in there too. There is no allusion to that in Russia, it’s a straight up gangster state and the gangsters have no issue showing their off wealth (except perhaps Putin himself).

I realize a lot of wealthy Chinese send their money or even family to “the west”, but those aren’t all “oligarchs”.

that’s actually worthy of its own thread. Especially as this is a message board and also considered social media.

Why do you keep doing that? Pretty much everybody thinks it’s bad, except a few in the far right Trump wing. It’s a question of how far do we want to go and risk things going nuclear. If it weren’t for nukes I suspect we’d incinerate everything Russian in Ukraine.

Sorry- just annoyed at the whole idea that because the US has done questionable things we don't have the "moral grounds" to object or be upset. Trying to point out the ridiculousness of that.

Too much effort for too little results. I'd rather spend energy, money, and effort on something more tangible like stopping this heinous war, caring for Ukraine refugees, or shoving one of those
    vacuum bombs up Putin's ...........

Not true. There have been several posters who are far more left leaning that have taken the avenue that ice queen is frustrated with. Let’s not act like that only happens on one side of the aisle.

It's an interesting discussion to pursue but I'm hesitant of drawing too big a conclusion from one datapoint. There are myriad of explanations for the change in rankings from week to week. I am confident, however, that the social scientists will be all over this unique situation and further evaluations are forthcoming.
