no idea but I'm now reading reprots taht they are working out the details of the deal to give US mineral rights. the loss of comms would be something that Europe can't easily or rapidly repalce and would put Ukraine at a major disadvantage.

the world needs to know that Musk is leveraging starlink to force political consent. you can bet your arse that India is as they consider their own starlink type system rather than contract with Musk

Zelensky surrenders to Trump and 'will sign mineral deal within hours'

This is morphing to using Russia as our button-man or thug. Pay up or else.

before Russia’s invasion, Ukraine was already one of the poorest countries in Europe - gdp per capita.

A deal such as this makes it in the US’s interest to protect Ukraine because we have to protect our interest in its minerals.

I hope that at the end of the day the international courts throw out whatever agreement is signed as it was clearly signed under duress or a future sane president undoes it

Does congress have to approve whatever agreement is drafted.

Sad par tis I can see the Ukranians being mad at Zelensky for signing it but without coms they will get slaughtered. Perhaps Zelensky shoudl call his bluff and let the world see what kind of person Musk and dt are if they haven't figured it out already.

Either way, I hope musk has burned the future of starlink around the world if it is going to be used as a political weapon going forward

'Extortion, pure and simple': Onlookers shocked by Trump threat to cut Ukraine's internet

U.S. negotiators are threatening to effectively cut off Ukraine’s access to the internet if the country’s leaders don’t agree to hand over minerals worth billions of dollars, according to a report Saturday.

Reuters was told by three sources that Trump’s representatives have suggested ending Ukraine’s use of the Starlink satellite internet system.

"The United States is doing it again: walking away from allies. The examples of men and women who counted on our support are many. I served as a U.S. intelligence officer in the field, often in dangerous conflict zones from Iraq to Syria to Afghanistan. I retired before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, but as the Trump administration abandons this former American ally, PTSD is setting in for many of my ilk: the actual operational practitioners of U.S. foreign policy.

Many of us, however, thought Ukraine would really be different. This was a classic story of right versus wrong, of “David vs. Goliath,” and the U.S. did come to Ukraine’s aid once Russian forces were on the move. Since then, Ukraine has exacted hundreds of thousands of casualties on the Russian invaders.

Did the U.S. do enough? No. Biden’s fear of possible escalation with Russia squandered too many opportunities, to the immense frustration of Ukraine, its soldiers and its supporters. But $60 billion in aid is not small potatoes. The Ukrainians fight valiantly and bravely,

My former colleagues’ thoughts shifted to the future as well. Many stated that this betrayal was the big one: epic in its scope, with far-reaching consequences for the next fight, likely with China. The fallout will be even worse than the Afghans left to fend for themselves. It will now be impossible for anyone to trust the U.S. as an ally. Our adversaries even now must be celebrating; there are surely open vodka bottles in the Kremlin."

I’m a former U.S. intelligence officer. Trump's Ukraine betrayal will have terrible consequences.

    Somewhere in Time
I had read something about how most of the rare earth minerals are in Eastern Ukraine and do not have very good accessibility in the foreseeable future and there we might be more interested in developing energy.

Mapped: Where are Ukraine's mineral resources and why does Trump want them?

    https://www.president.gov.ua/en/new...-spg-do-ukrayini-zmicnit-liderstvo-ssha-96281

In any case, it is telling that Trump doesn't want to stand on sharing common values and defending liberty and freedom - there has to be some extortion involved, guess he has to keep his supporters happy by creating jobs in Ukraine!

An American journalist was murdered by our government. Not a lawyer but I believe our State Dept. was legally obligated to help Gonzalo Lira. One phone call would have freed him. But they wanted him dead.

What you call Russian propaganda was simply excellent analysis. What's wrong with you? Tell me one thing Gonzalo Lira said that wasn't true.

Bro was an Andrew Tate wanna be who was trying to get attention. This is the type of stuff you think is "great journalism"? Guy was a huge loser. I don't think anyone should ever be jailed for free speech, but going to spread propaganda in a foreign country during wartime certainly is not going to be a wise choice

What you call propaganda was simply Gonzalo telling the truth as he saw it. Unfortunately you aren't smart enough to recognize the truth when you hear it
