Last thing for now. Didn't realize the story behind "Swan Lake" broadcasts during the Soviet years. They used it when "something was wrong", like rogue coverage, coup attempts, etc. Whenever it played people knew something was up. Cnn live ""No to war" were the last words broadcast on this independent Russian TV station From CNN’s Vasco Cotovio and Nathan Hodge in Moscow Independent Russian news outlet TV Rain ended its final broadcast with the words "no to war" on Thursday. The station was forced to shut down because of the Russian government’s crackdown on local media over unfavorable coverage of the war in Ukraine. TV Rain had already been forced off television airwaves but continued operating a YouTube broadcast. Its staff signed off, saying “no to war,” before walking off the station’s set. The network then broadcast Tchaikovsky's ballet Swan Lake, a nod to the 1991 coup attempt against the government of then-Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. As that coup was taking place, the ballet played repeatedly on television, an indication to viewers that something was wrong."
I completely agree with you!! Sorry for the delayed response. I fainted and hit my head somewhere between typing that and hitting “Post Reply”.
Yep. Those live shots of the shellings were … really a laser show put on by the Russians as a gesture of kindness and goodwill to the citizens of Ukraine who opened their arms to welcome their liberators.
Well they're now apparently letting the plant workers work but at gun point. So hopefully if they're intention is to turn the power off they do it SAFELY versus being morons & blowing it up.
From CNN live "EU Commission suspends science and research programs with Russia From CNN's Sharon Braithwaite The European Commission has suspended cooperation with Russian entities in research, science and innovation, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the commission said Friday in a statement. It is also suspending payments to Russian entities under existing contracts and “will not conclude any new contracts nor any new agreements" with Russian organizations. "
Cnn live "UN Security Council will hold emergency meeting following attack on Ukrainian nuclear plant From CNN's Richard Roth Following the attack on a nuclear plant in Ukraine by Russian troops, the United Nations Security Council will hold an emergency meeting at 11:30 a.m. ET Friday in New York, according to three UN diplomats. " Russia will of course stick with the it's the Ukranians sabotaging us line. However, would hope that perhaps the rest decide to speak out now that the idiots thought it would be smart to shell a nuclear reactor. Doubt it but would be nice.
Russian media: "Putin is invading another country unprovoked. We should not be at war." Putin and his lackeys: фейковые новости! ("Fake News!") Sounds very familiar....
Microsoft has halted sales, etc in/to Russia & is helping Ukraine with IT/cyberattack defense. Google will no longer run ads etc in Russia. Same with Twitter.
Am I the only one who thinks this is a bridge too far? Science collaboration should be above politics.
Medicine I agree with you to a point. The problem here is any research can then be taken over by the Russians at any time, projects and actual scientists can be held hostage to Putin's whims, any profits from any innovation could be either seized by Russia or frozen for collaboration with Russia. The space station...I can't imagine the level of stress up there for all of them since the Russians likely understand Putin has zero qualms about crashing them...oops I mean letting them fall out of orbit into somewhere on Earth.
Heard on the radio they're also filming propaganda videos of being welcomed into Ukraine, handing out humanitarian aid, etc, to air back in Russia especially.
The masters of fake media and narratives... From CNN live "Russian military warns of "provocations" involving Western journalists in Ukraine From CNN's Nathan Hodge in Moscow Russian Ministry of Defense spokesperson Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov warned on Friday that Ukrainian forces in the city of Kharkiv were readying a "provocation" in concert with Western journalists by firing heavy weaponry from a residential area with the aim of provoking a retaliation by Russian forces that would be caught on camera. Russian statements about supposed "provocations" by the Ukrainian side have been a prelude to shelling or strikes by Russian forces." Guess that way if somehow the real news gets to Russia then they've put doubts into the already faithful older generation
I wonder how sanctions will affect people wanting to flee Russia btw? Like younger professionals, etc, who now will fear for their lives, see the writing on the wall, etc. In the old days they'd make a dash to the US embassy or other Western embassy. But not sure how that works in the modern age.
