I read the first tweet, but didn't Chernobyl explode? I wasn't a nuclear explosion but it released a lot of radiation.

I believe it was a meltdown, like Diachi. But that’s purely recollection.

Edit: Checked. It was a meltdown followed by an explosion (steam explosion). 70% of the fallout went to Belarus.

Correct. And it was a different type of reactor (a far more dangerous and unstable one).

Yeah it was estimated by models that the core reacted 350000 MW before it exploded. Hard to imagine that kind of energy.

    BBC:

The head of the Zaporozhia regional state administration says that the safety of the Zaporizhzia power plant is "secured".

Alexander Starukh posted just one sentence on Facebook, saying that he had spoken to the director of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Station in Enerhodar, and had been assured of its safety.

"The director of the ZNPP assured me that at the moment, the nuclear security of the object is secured," he wrote.

It comes as top Ukrainian officials have warned of a possible nuclear meltdown due to reported Russian shelling there.

Thank God! I did read on CNN experts are saying that depending on where the fire is that it should still be ok but that there shouldn't be shelling, etc, continuing.

"Nuclear physicist here: there's a lot to be worried about, but one thing you SHOULDN'T worry about, is Russia bombing Ukrainian nuclear power plants. It's literally, physically impossible to make those explode."

This is probably the first statement on the GC's board the EVERYONE hopes is correct!

    Amen.

What caused Chernobyl though? Although you'd assume there have been major changes stemming from that.

Maybe someone got to them & told them to stop firing on it! From CNN live

"Zaporizhzhia spokesperson: Fighting has stopped near power plant and radiation levels are currently normal

From CNN's Masha Angelova, Hira Humayun and Philip Wang

Fighting has stopped near the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and background radiation levels are currently normal as a fire continued at the facility, a spokesperson at the plant said on Friday.

Spokesperson Andrii Tuz said the plant has not sustained any critical damage, although only one power generation unit out of six is operational.

In an earlier Facebook post, Tuz said at least one power generating unit at the nuclear plant was struck in the fighting. "A lot of technical equipment was hit," he told CNN."

Is it possible for explosives to damage the structure and expose the core? I would think so.

Yeah, what did cause Chernobyl? They should make, like, a TV series about it or something. ;)
