For what it’s worth, should it come to direct action, I believe we could defeat Russia without ground troops. The ground troops, Ukrainians, are already there. What they need is air and, perhaps, maritime power.

But before it came to that, a whole range of nonkinetic measures could be tried. For instance, imagine what a show of force it would be for us to declare that we would be salvaging Moskva, which would be our right under the law of the sea as Russia has abandoned the wreck. Our Navy and Air Force would necessarily have to provide security for the operation, since it’s so close to a war zone. Odesa (with Ukraine’s permission) makes the most sense as a base of operations, and of course we would have to secure that as well (air defenses, etc). When Russia whines, simply ask them, “Are you going to (try to) attack U.S. forces conducting a legal salvage operation in international waters or not?”

President Biden called FDR to mind in his SOTU last January. What I just described is something FDR would have done (completely under the scope of his authority) to put a finger in Hitler’s chest and say, “What are you going to do about it?”

 

Very informative. But still worrisome. Nukes are nukes, but beyond that is cyber vulnerability and whether we also might lose some valuable assets to drones. I know we're better than them, but I still worry.

Your instinct is correct in my opinion. I would say in the beginning we did not have a good idea about how far Russia was willing to go, but now we have a solid idea of how scared they are of us. If they really believed we would push the matter, they would seek as graceful of an exit as they could. Second and related, I would encourage you to read a book called Putin’s Kleptocracy by Karen Dawisha. It’s intrinsically interesting to learn how Putin came to power and how he keeps it, but my main point is that Putin and his key holders live particularly large. People who live as large as they do don’t go starting nuclear wars. It’s all a bluff.

That level of stupid was shocking at the time. Now it’s basically representative.

 

The best reason to keep our troops out of Ukraine, our ships away from its waters and our planes out of its skies: when Ukraine is defeated we can beat our breasts about the way we would have shown Russia had they let us.

I am disappointed in Trump’s decision on this matter. But I’ve never been a carte Blanche Trumper. There are elements of the swamp that hate him and I do believe he cares more about regular folk than Joe Biden, but you don’t become POTUS without cutting some deals on the side with the various industrial complexes that exist in this country.

At best, this decision is a gamble. I surely hope it doesn’t backfire. It’s not a small detail that it appears Britain and the EU are going to double down on aid as well. Hope it works out, but Zelenskyy is highly corrupt.

Stunning how many elected GOP representatives, particularily since the time of Trump, apparantly have no clue of US strategic foreign policy,
why NATO was created, how many AMERICANS died in two major conflicts - Korea and Vietnam - fighting against SOVIET / Russian ideological
and political expansion (where does the GOP think N Korea and N Vietnam got their weapons from?), the CUBAN missle crises, and innumerable
small scale geo/political wars in all parts of the world. (Including S America).

Just goes to show how IGNORANT the GOP voting public is and how, instead of educating themselves, follow lock step behind a crook, traitor and idiot,
that thinks Russia, N Korea, and totalitarian regimes are "our friends" and the best form of Gov't.
