If it were just a tribute, we would have been done with it after the first time. It is a tradition and even though I am not the biggest Petty fan, he has always been a legend around Gainesville, so I am good with it. I just think it is funny how vanilla we have become as a fan base which has been forced on us and how we are letting LSU push us around both on the field and in the stands. The fans are soft, just like the athletic department. We are basically Texas without the money.
Yep, it was lame but what they sang after beating Bama a couple years ago shows their lack of class so it’s not surprising
Too bad there wasn’t more stuff thrown. Maybe we should have milkshake night and free milkshakes for fans at tge end of the third Quater in a couple years.
Attended many UF games. Petty song is not a tradition. A fairly recent phenomenon. I actually don’t like it, but know I’m in the minority. Ban LSU band from returning due to their lack of proper decorum if you like
All traditions start somewhere. This one started as they all do. Organically as a one off that stuck. I love it. 50 years from now it will be just as old school as We Are The Boys.
Interesting thought. I wonder if "We Won't Back Down" will last that long. I like the song and think the lyric fits the moment. OTOH, I don't get any kind of sports vibe or derive any Gator sports inspiration from it. As a Gator [tradition], my thoughts are meh.
There is freedom of speech in this country, which imho allows what the lsu band did, but there is not freedom from the consequences of your speech. If their classless band is going to pull a stunt like this in the swamp, they should expect some kind of retaliation for their actions. I wouldn't condone the student section invading the band section and beating them senseless with their own instruments, but......
Disagree. The Gator band was once known as "The Fightin' Gator Band" and the moniker was earned. Others can attest to moments in Knoxville, Jax, etc. where band members were attacked (and usually fought back). The UF marching band director was attacked just a couple years ago, but I can't remember where.
As I posted above a ways, getting to go to an away game to play is a privilege and not a right. I say the President, AD, and head of the LSU band are one week behind schedule with a sincere letter of apology. Methinks it is over...except for the privilege thingy. I do hope we exercise our option.
The naming aspect might be legend, but my understanding is that they earned the name. There have def been several instances of the band being attacked and defending themselves, usually @ Knoxville. Truth is it's pretty stupid to mess with a band kid when they have 300 immediate friends, most holding metal implements or wooden/composite mallets.
