    This is not just fireable. It could/should have landed her a manslaughter charge if the suspect had been killed.

    This was neglegence at every level.

    There should be criminal and civil charges against these idiots. Parked on a railroad track with a person locked inside?? Unbelievable!!

    Even the cops that let Dahmer kill that 14 year old kid got paid suspensions and slaps on the wrist. The corruption runs deep as hell.

    In most organizations, paid or unpaid leave is the standard HR practice while an issue is officially investigated. Part of the reason for that is to limit wrongful termination lawsuits/settlements.

    Not saying it's right or wrong in this circumstance, but they're going to follow their official HR policies, which odds are call for this exact step.

    Again, not saying it's right or wrong, but it is standard HR policy in many organizations to immediately put someone on paid/unpaid leave if they're under investigation for wrong-doing. The "paid" part typically doesn't mean anything beyond the employee having Paid Time Off accumulated that they can use for these circumstances. They're not just told, "You messed up. We're going to pay you to take a vacation while we investigate."

    I agree 100% i was just answering the question as to why they arent fired right away.

    People are all about defending processes until it involves unions. Then it's fire immediately. Of course these guys deserve it and then some but there is still a process to protect because there have been other situations that seemed obvious but were not.

    I think you'll find similar policies in almost any large organization, where they have unions or not. That's not a policy just designed to protect the employees; it's also to limit risk to the company.

    If they aren't fired within a few weeks and the investigation is still ongoing, then that will 100% be because of unions. IMO.

    I agree. Our company does the same without a union.

    But... not if it was this negligent. If one of my guys left a forklift running in our warehouse for instance and it started rolling and plowed into a client in our warehouse. I would know by the end of the day by looking at the video we have in that building. That person would be let go. It is a blatant policy violation. Seems that this is a blatant safety violation that no amount of time will change.

    My point about unions is they generally take the open/shut component away.

    Im not saying that unions are wrong. I'm saying that's the reason. Good or bad.

    A non union employee would have been fired as soon as the tape was viewed and the witnesses interviewed. (Which in many companies would be immediately.)

    Wasn't referring to you. If people only knew how corrupt and petty city officials can be then they would understand why public sector union's exist. We have an agency to the south of us that is non union. They run people out of their agency over and over to the point they have a staffing crisis. Either you are in the club or you aren't over there. And the employees they have lost for the most part are damn good people and employees and found work in either other agencies or left the field to become firefighters instead of cops.

    The problem is police tend to circle the wagons, overall I fully agree with “due process” which is especially important with public servants so that their terminations aren’t political, though when you have it on video these decisions should be more swift. Some of these cases are undeniable incompetence at best (or in some of the shootings grossly unjustified use of force). Even where it falls short of criminal charges, the incompetence displayed should be fireable.

    If these cops survive the process I'll be in line with you demanding accountability. It's absolutely mind blowing that they would think it's ok to leave the car on the tracks at any point in time even without a subject in it.

    It's the same in our warehouse. A collision caused by an indisputable safety violation that results in injury or damage to inventory is gone before EOD. No union but we do have over 900,000 US employees.
