Talking about a KenPom anomaly. K-State is first in Big 12 at 17-2 (6-1). They beat Kansas, who has 3 B12 losses. Kansas is #10, K-State #26.
Thanks for finding and sharing. This brought back memories of him at the SEC tournament and he was our guy. Hard to believe we will have to face one of the finest basketball players ever at Florida. I will always have a place in my heart for someone who always took care of business and was a great teammate.
My favorite Gator basketball player of the last decade. So much so that I've become a closet K State fan. So happy he is back playing at a high level.
There has been MUCH discussion about this. Quick answer: UF did not want the legal responsability should something bad happen. There are many posts about it but IMO the above is the bottom line. UF lawyers said..........."NO".
I think him coming back would have been decided by the medical doctors at UF. They would have needed to sign off on it not UF attorneys. If the doctors said he was good to go then it would be on them if something happened to him. It reminds me of Scott Brantley many years ago. UF doctors would not give him the okay and told him he should never play again. He later found doctors with a different opinion from what I understood and was allowed to play in the NFL.
this scenario is not uncommon with major injuries - Jarvis Jones hurt his neck at USC. They would not clear him to play there. He transfers to Georgia and becomes a first round pick. The original school is usually the one in a damned if we do dammed if we don’t situation so plays it safe.
I never knew the history prior to and after the Hank Gathers death. Apparently he passed out before and they prescribed him Inderal to prevent his heart from going into Vtach. He didn't like the way he felt on the medication as he said he felt sluggish and the doctor agreed to reduce the dosage. I believe it was found out that he stopped taking the medication altogether prior to his collapse. The school and the physicians were still sued by the family. Just an interesting parallel and I imagine contributed to how these things are handled now.
I've thought of the Brantley comparison as well. And while I have no doubt Scot would probably make the same decision now, he is paying dearly for his continued football career.
Scott is not doing well? I hate that, he was a hero for us back in the day. Butkus type hitter. Ferocious.
Hank Gathers was a talented basketball player who died suddenly during a college basketball game in 1990. Prior to his death, he had fainted several times on the court and was diagnosed with a heart condition. He was prescribed Inderal to prevent his heart from going into ventricular tachycardia, but he didn't like how the medication made him feel sluggish. Despite the doctor reducing the dosage, Gathers stopped taking the medication altogether. He eventually collapsed during a game and died from a heart condition. His family sued the school and the physicians involved for their handling of his case. This tragedy has led to increased awareness and changes in the way heart conditions are handled in sports.
