If you read many of my posts you’d know I’m not quick to throw the label around. Why do you think he called me a social Justice warrior?
It can be a problem with message boards and cultures within them. On this message board I’ve been characterized as a racist and a trans phobe. On a different message board I was viewed as a communist sympathizer and wokester. As someone who considers himself broadly centrist, I spend a good deal of time arguing with the extremes, and as such tend to get categorized as the opposite extreme. I don’t support a male swimmer who identifies as female competing as a female. At the same time I’d like to think if I saw people picking on that same trans swimmer I’d tear them a new asshole and give them an earful.
My post definitely struck a nerve with the person who gave me the disagree. Looks like he needs to do some deep self-reflecting and soul-searching.
Rice burner history: The term goes way back and was undoubtedly racist. Especially during Vietnam and when Japanese automakers hit the US. But those uses weren’t necessarily pop culture, that was people Doing Too Much to be assholes. Then it was used to describe Japanese bikes, especially Katanas and Ninjas (Honda CBs too, but they were lame; Yamaha also made them, and still do, and they were badass, but for whatever reason didn’t catch fire like Kawasaki and Suzuki.) I had a Katana 750 myself as a life guard at Myrtle Beach in the 90’s. And yes, I was as insufferable as it sounds. At that time I suppose it was already racist, but mild. It was mainly a way for Harley riders to express disdain for everyone else. Like they still do today. But then the tuner craze hit, and the term spread to cars. “Ricers” and “Rice boy” also came into the lexicon, and those terms were noticeably more hateful. That was Japanese cars ridiculously tuned and glammed out. $100K mods on a $20K car. But that also spread to non-Japanese makes, including BMW 3 Series and American makes like Mustangs. The “Fast & Furious” franchise is this culture. The “main” car is a Charger. But mainly it was Skylines and S2000’s and RX-7’s and Supras until they eventually went silly with Ferraris and Bentleys and Jags. I am proud to say I resisted being a tuner. But eventually “rice burner” went from being a mostly benign description of Japanese-style bikes that most people couldn’t tell apart to a not so subtle pejorative that spread to cars too. Japanese trucks aren’t referred to that way, unless of course you’re going out of your way to be real-life Archie Bunker. “Crotch-rocket” is the way to describe the bikes. “Tricked out” is the safe way for cars.
Throwing around “social Justice warrior” in that situation I think gives the guy away as a conservative media consuming zombie, rather than just a run of the mill asshole.
I don’t think it is as simple as that. I suspect because she was black he made assumptions about her and as such didn’t think she deserved the common decency not to be shouted at. I suspect he doesn’t react the same way to a white mom. Perhaps it is less racial and more tribal. He assumes a black lady is an evil “libbie” and warrants indignation. Perhaps he treats a white lady with blue hair and a Bernie shirt the same way, but not a blonde with daisy dukes and a MAGA shirt. Or maybe he’s just an asshole. I have my suspicions but we will never know for sure.
While the Fast and Furious types I don’t think are specific to Japanese cars, I always thought it a derogatory term to describe a crappy tuner job on a lower end Honda Civic or Nissan (basically those kids that throw an obnoxiously loud muffler and aero kit on their still 150 horsepower Honda Civic… like a civic needs some big spoiler to keep it grounded). I remember that being big in the 90’s, still see some around now, there seems to be a thing now where they camber their wheels a ridiculous amount to “stance” the car. Makes no sense to me as I’m sure they are messing up suspension parts and wheels/tires for this “look”, which almost doesn’t look safe to me with such little tire contacting the ground. I don’t think Ive heard it used to describe a GTR or Supra or a genuine performance car, nor any American or European car. I always thought it was when they hilariously tricked out some average Japanese compact or subcompact car (mostly low end Hondas) without even having performance.
Sadly, I can recall my own dad calling the first Hondas “rice burners.” But he’s…out there. And what I would call Doing Too Much, still to this day. But his voice was muffled in those days, he had to work hard to find an audience. It really just wasn’t part of polite society. Japanese cars were a natural tuner target, they were made to have easily replaced parts. That’s why it started there. Including Supras (I also had one of those! All factory, thank you.) Paul Walker drove a Supra in the movies. Otherwise I agree with you down the line. And “tricked out” makes the point without bringing rice I mean race into it.
SJW is an idiotic “insult” in that case, unless he was truly calling himself out for his own societal injustice. And I am fairly certain he wasn’t making a confession. What absurd wokeness were you exhibiting to provoke this accusation? I admire the even-handedness. That’s why they keep me around, to jump to this conclusion. Convicted!
What I’m not always clear on is whether something is outright racism or bias, or the fact that a different race is a signal they are of a different political tribe. The result is kind of the same but the motivations are a bit different.
OK, I_boy, what graduated steps did you take to make sure he took your concerns seriously? Did you display appropriate levels of concern and affection for the man? Did you warn him to take your concerns seriously? Did you call his boss? Did you try another strategy such as taking into account his interests (which may not have included taking you seriously?) How did you communicate your expectations to the man? Did you consistently enforce positive and negative consequences with him? Did you project a sense of emotional objectivity to him? How did you reframe or examine his behavior in terms that are not offensive? Well I_boy? Hmmmmmm? Just having fun here, but that was a serious situation that could have gotten out of hand had he been armed. In this MAGA environment you need to be extra careful and assume guys like that are crazy enough to do something stupid.
The next-to-last sentence of your post is the essence of a social justice warrior. You're assuming he was a racist. Perhaps he's a misogynist, or merely a curmudgeon having a bad day. You didn't allude to any racist epithets on his part, so I can't assume he's a racist, either. Helping the lady out was a good thing. Launching your own crusade to cancel someone, even if he was being an asshole--meh.
Looks like he struck a nerve too seeing as you returned his disagree on all his posts. I don't understand why posters have to give each other negative ratings. You will notice I have given less than 50 of them in all the years I have been posting here. If I had to guess I would say you have gotten more than your share of the 30 or so I have given though.
If you have no problem with that poster constantly disagreeing with my posts, then you should have no problem with the rare few times I choose to return fire. And getting negative ratings from someone like you means nothing.
“Cancel.” Def never complain when someone treats you like you aren’t worthy, maybe you aren’t. Just assume you deserved it and fix the problem: you.
Yes I know. That thought has crossed my mind. I live in a land with armed nut jobs. I think part of my thinking is he was clearly on the job as an employee with a vendor for the convenience store. If it was just some guy in a pick up truck I may have approached it differently.
How did I cancel him? I never said or implied to him that he was a racist. I just expressed it here on this board - where he is anonymous. Like I said I would have done the same thing if it happened to a white lady. Perhaps I did cancel him by reporting him, but it was because of his assoholic behavior, not the race of the “victim”.
