Fair point on warrant officers. Subject to the old “the Army can waive anything if they want you bad enough” caveats though, wouldn’t he have likely been too old to direct commission in 2005 though (if I’m doing my math right I think he would have been 41)?

The OP quoted a key member of the Trump campaign misrepresenting Gov Walz's retirement after 24 years serving his country. J. D. Vance said: “When Tim Walz was asked by his country to go to Iraq, do you know what he did? He dropped out of the Army and allowed his unit to go without him — " Contrary to this intentionally, misleading statement. Gov Walz was NOT asked by his country to go to Iraq until two months AFTER he retired.

Also, the immense hypocrisy of the
Trump campaign questioning an honorable man who served his country for 24 years on behalf of a dishonorable man who has never served his country is certainly on topic. As President, Trump served no one but himself. It's no coincidence that the only significant legislation he got passed was huge tax cuts for himself and his super-rich cronies.

‘No Evidence’: CNN Reporter Delivers Devastating Fact-Check On Walz’s Claims About Military Service (msn.com)

CNN correspondent Tom Foreman delivered a fact-check Wednesday against Democratic Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz after he claimed to have carried weapons “in war.”

Foreman appeared on “CNN News Central” alongside show co-host Brianna Keilar, where he discussed a previous claim Walz made that suggesting he carried weapons in war while speaking about gun control. Foreman stated there is “no evidence” to suggest the Democratic governor’s comments were true.

“Walz did make a comment speaking to a group, he’s done it a couple of times, where he has used language that has suggested that he carried weapons in a fighting situation,” Foreman said. “As you know, with your contact with the military, I know from coming from a military family, there is a difference between being in a combat area, being involved at a time of war and actually being in a position where people are shooting at you. There is no evidence that at any time Governor Walz was in a position of being shot at, and some of his language could easily be seen to suggest that he was.”

“So that is absolutely false when he said that about gun rights out there. The campaign has essentially come forward to say, ‘Look, he had a long career, he would never want to purposely mislead people about this.’ It’s what campaigns tend to say. And I’m sure we haven’t heard the end of this, but it’s an interesting argument that brings to mind past conflicts we’ve had in politics where military people start going at each other. Then you start saying, ‘Well, what is the basis from this, how much of it is true and what are we to draw from that as voters,'” Foreman concluded

I’m not sure what point he thought he was making. If one VP candidate is lying about his service , what is the point of showing that the other is being honest about it?

I find this thread confusing as crap and have no idea what if any criticism Walz deserves. I don’t think it matters though. The key is to make people think it. To that end, I wanted to add one more Trump quote to your list that might be the most relevant here. This is Trump from a 2004 interview on MSNBC regarding the original swift boat attacks on Kerry:

"It's almost coming out that Bush is a war hero and Kerry isn't," Trump said, admiringly. "I think that could be the greatest spin I've ever seen."

The bone spurs campaign is trying to use a fake take down on Walz's military service?

What's next, Trump will come out saying adultery is bad?

In the end comes down to people believing what they want to believe. When he retired from the National Guard Walz was 40 years old and had already served 24 years in the Guard and in fact had fought involuntary separation from the National Guard a few years earlier based on a medical condition specifically hearing loss. It's also rather incongruous that the same posters who rated my previous post as "funny" and are apparently supporting the theory that Walz retired to avoid potential deployment to Iraq are supporting a candidate who avoided military service by using his father's influence to induce a podiatrist who was leasing an office from the candidate's father to write a letter documenting said candidate's "bone spurs".

I remember the same people here throwing fits about Walz’ comments about assault weapons, defending to their dying breath Ron DeSantis’ bogus ads showing him as a fighter pilot.

While I want to make it clear that I'm not minimizing JD Vance's service when he was in Iraq his job was in public affairs essentially writing press releases. He was still a Marine and he was still deployed to a combat zone although I distinctly recall that when Al Gore ran for the presidency and later vice presidency his service in Vietnam as an army journalist a job similar to that of Vance in Iraq was denigrated because he wasn't a combat infantryman along with the false narrative that he was safe because his unit was headquartered in Saigon while completely ignoring the fact the Gore actually volunteered to cover combat operations in which he was in as much danger as the actually infantry soldiers that he was covering. The Republicans and the right-wing media even promulgated the narrative that the photographer who accompanied Gore was his "personal bodyguard".

There is no “problem.” It’s campaign season. When there’s not a lot of substance to attack a guy, you find something else. The campaign trail is ugly.
