Correct. But I thought Brindise was referring to frustration of midmajors watching their players get poached each year by the likes of Virginia. I guess I should watch Bennett's press conference before I speculate, though.
I don't think his style of play works well in the NIL environment where turnover is really high. The top kids want to play in a fast paced environment like Todd Golden. I wonder if he just doesn't need a year off to recharge his batteries. I don't see him heading to the NBA
Yeah, who am I kidding? I'm not gonna watch the presser. That requires time and effort and I'd rather climb on my virtual soapbox and shout at the world, with no research, study, or thoughtful reflection to back it up. I'm a 'murican, dammit.
I didn't watch the whole presser, but saw clips on the news. He says he quit because of the state of college athletics, NIL, agents, transfers, etc. in a nutshell.
true…but perhaps to succeed Bennett would need to get more involved with tampering / back door channels to bring in talent and he doesn’t want to. Maybe - like many places - his own players are asking for more money even after agreeing to another amount, maybe more agents and handlers hounding him is a turn off. I don’t know. But…one can be a coach at a large institution like a Virginia with access to alumni and $ collectives but prefer to coach - actually coach - vs deal more and more with non coaching items (NIL, agents, transfer portal, etc). Just my guess that is some of the reasons he retired.
That’s where it’s going. Teams will need to hire GMs to work with the coach to acquire and manage players. As it is, coaches are overtasked with too much to deal with that is outside of coaching.
Well, it’s certainly a very odd time to quit on the team and school; it’s not like this NIL/portal stuff just happened. Seems like he could have muddled through this season and call it quits at season’s end. I know reports state otherwise, my guess is it’s something medical like Urban (oh wait….) or something of a personal nature he wouldn’t want to get into at a press conference.
