USDA Goes Whole Hog on the Barbeque

Seems like after the Pig Bomb documentary came out about wild hogs destroying crops and property, there were several TV shows that followed people who were trying to thin them out. As I recall, they were all trying to trap them, rather than just shoot.

 

And then you can feed the whole church social?

Why weren’t they eaten before? Is the meat gamey?

 

The males are particularly so. It helps if they are castrated and then"harvested" later. Their testosterone, if released into their system, gives the meat a bad odor and taste.

I'm fine with other people eating it, but no thanks for me.

 

There are wild hogs on Southern Georgia islands that eat mostly shellfish in the marshes. The hog meat tastes like shellfish. It's pretty interesting.

 

Not to turn this into a gun thread but the one legitimate use of AR-15s I’ve heard is for hunting feral hogs.

 

When I go to my property in OK, I will spend a lot of nights thinning out the hogs. when I ate meat decades ago, I thought both the males and females tasted fine but if was shooting to eat (versus shooting to cull) I would hit smaller ones (< 125) in a way that turned them off like a light switch.
They do have less fat then the hormone laden crap most people eat so it is easier to dry out the meat.

That has always been my stance. Thru trial and error, I have found the fifteen round clips are best. I would also say that the AR-15 should be chambered in something heavier that .223

 

That apparently is key if you're not going to castrate them, don't give them a chance to generate a flood of testosterone.

Many years ago a local Tampa radio shock jock, Bubba the Love Sponge, went to trial along with a few others over a radio "stunt" where a hog was slaughtered in the station parking lot and then cooked. They were charged with animal cruelty. Bubba was represented by Norman Cannella, Sr., a friend of mine, and somehow hog testosterone became an issue in the case. I learned way more than I ever needed to about that topic. Bubba was acquitted, by the way.

 

I guess it's good he was acquitted, do you really want to head to prison known as Bubba the love sponge?

 

He was the guy who "allegedly" secretly filmed Hulk Hogan having sex with his (Bubba's) wife in their home and then released the video to Gawker Media. Hulk sued Gawker out of existence ($140 million judgment) and Bubba settled with him. Hulk was the best man at Bubba's wedding and is the godfather of his kid. Sordid stuff.

 

Seems like you could create a small fence area, lure them in and shoot them with ar-15 type weapon
