Unfortunately a great recruiting class will not change things for next year. He has to knock it out of the park with the portal. he is in the same situation. Norvell was in year three the difference is that Norvell operated with urgency. So many said wait, give it time, and the other half said need urgency, and should not take this much time can win in year one!!!!
I don't think this comments were a dig at the current coaches. I think he was saying if they just wanted mediocrity, they wouldn't be here. Their lives would be much easier elsewhere if mediocrity was okay with them. They are here because they want to win at an elite institution. I'm not saying Meyer is going out of his way to compliment Napier's approach, but I didn't think his comments were negative at all toward the current staff.
Go back and see what Urban did at Bowling Green in his first head coaching job then what he built at Utah.
If we end up searching for a new coach again, it probably won’t be because we’re on an upswing. We’re in a tough spot right now. We haven’t been in a situation like Urban took over since Urban took over. Even what Muschamp took over was a mess, though he had a much easier path to getting back on track than Billy. We were still riding pretty high back then, had some talent, no nil or transfer portal to navigate, the sec wasn’t as strong top to bottom, etc. Getting us back on track right now is a tall task.
It’s not that important to me, and I’m fine taking your word for it. I thought he was walking into pretty good situations at both those places too, but I’ll believe you if you say those were similar to what we’re going through.
All I know is if you type the word process again, I’m going to have your wife fill all your scotch bottles with old crow, unless she can find some worse rot gut bourbon laying around.
There's no coming back from that. I mean, how do you change the narrative if that happens. It's 2013 all over again when Muschamp started 14 as dead man walking.
Napier recruited and played more freshman than any other SEC team, four of which are getting post season SEC recognition for greatness. The only gripe I have is that he needs far more balance of youth and experience. I will say this as often as It's appropriate to say. With one particular skill practiced and understood (open field tackling) we win the Arkansas game... the Missouri game... the FSU game and maybe even the Kentucky game. That is 4 more wins that we lost... games that we could have easily won with on skill-set that we were atrocious at this past season. This I think was on the coaches, some might disagree, but I can tell you from experience that open field tackling is a very perishable skill that has to be practiced every day we can... This is NOT about the talent of the players... Yes our O-line was injured and had a lack of depth... needs to be fix and I think Napier will fix that in the portal. The players we're getting is fine... as I mentioned about the 4 freshman that received SEC awards for their play this past season. Now if we can hold on to this next 2024 class we have a chance (with the right number of skilled portal players) can turn it around even with this impossible schedule we have next year. If we keep the best players from de-committing we will have a much improved team... if we learn how to tackle in the open field, and that is easier said than done, we win more games. Our next position coaches on defense need to be great teachers of fundamentals. And, yes, there is much more to proper tackling than I make it sound like but we can get far better even in just one year. It will not be easy to get there, but that "detail" should be our goal on the defensive side of the ball, that and simplifying the defense. We had 4 more winnable games that if we just taught one very hard yet important skill-set. I think we all need to calm down and play this next year out. I know we expected more than 5 wins, but it is what it is and now more than ever we have who we have as a head coach and all the bi!@hing in the world will not change that for the better.
Meyer is a winner unlike the let's accept 7-5 as the goal losers. I'd love to see Meyer back as coach.
I like him, really want him to succeed. Nothing I have seen lately tells me that's going to happen. I hope I'm wrong.
