As to timing - though frustrating as hell for us fans, it does UF or CK absolutely no good to announce any earlier than end of regular season, correct?

CK can’t recruit yet.

Seems like maybe both sides want to get all th details hammered out before announcing.

Hopefully that’s the “delay” we are seeing.

 

Are you sure about the Spurrier dates? My freshman year was 90 and I remember the murders and then going to Spurriers first game. Am I mistaken? It has been a while and I could be off a year.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is that I can't remember a head coach ever being hired this early in mid-November.

The whole premise behind active coaches not accepting another HC job until December when their regular season is already.

"But Chip Kelly is not coaching! He could take the job tomorrow!"

Well, Urban, like Chip, was working for ESPN in 2011 and could have taken the Ohio State job almost anytime during the season because Luke Fickell was only an interim head coach after the Jim Tressell tattoo incident and no Ohio State fan believed he would be named the full time head coach. Urban was named the head coach on Nov 28, 2 days after Ohio State's finale against Michigan.

I'm merely suggesting the possibility that Chip might not get hired until after the season. Maybe he's telling UF he can get Soandso from State University to be offensive coordinator but can't make any guarantees since he isn't allowed to talk to said person until the season ends.

You are correct. Spurrier was hired in Dec 1989 and his first season was 1990. I was a junior at UF then.
