Netflix has been on a roll, they might be back as the top streaming service rn

In retrospect I agree on Hit Man, but I am a big fan of Linklater, so I would have had to have seen it sooner or later regardless. Also we try to cycle through streaming services, canceling one as soon as it isn’t immediately obvious what we should watch next. We haven’t had Netflix in a while, so it was a good time to cycle it back in. Oddly

Side note: Netflix had totally deleted my account. I had them from 2005ish to 2020 or so. Then again in 2022 maybe, where all my old activity was still stored. Now nothing. Surprising since I’d think they would want to bring back their old clients.

Been enjoying first season of Warrior on NF. I thought Hit Man was OK. saw & liked Last stop in Yuma County. predictable & simple....I like that.

I really enjoyed Warriors. Wish they’d sign em up for a 4th season.

I realize this feels like a review 1,000 days too late, but we finally watched Oppenheimer. It was fantastic. The acting, the storytelling, the photography - all impressive. Somehow it was a biography/history film that maintained tension throughout.

I think that was an old Showtime or Cinemax show. Similar to Banshee. Netflix seems to get old or canceled series and gives them new life.

Did you watch it? I thoroughly enjoyed it (it received a 86 & 96 in RT). I’ve since read they did a decent job of portraying the culture and political gyrations - Caesar, Brutus, even Cleopatra, etc. And one of the primary themes was the friendship & loyalty between two Roman soldiers after battle thru various life issues, family etc. has big battle scenes. only 2 seasons but they do a good job of buttoning it up.
But just my opinion, maybe not for everyone.

I saw the first 2 episodes of the second (and last, as it turns out) season--about the time I posted that inquiry. Kinda' dropped the ball on it. But what I have seen of it, has been pretty solid (reminiscent of Gladiator and Troy). At your prompting, I believe I'll take another gander at it--and if I finish, I'll be sure to follow up here.

    Wife haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaated. Utterly hated it.

I didnt mind it. Good atmosphere, solid acting, never quite clear like a light dream confusing, but lacked a payoff. They cop out with a narrated explanation by the bad guy on what is going on at the end. Also too often checking out the weird sound in the dark scary place alone moments.

Yeah, I think its going to be pretty divisive, and people that like rules and answers are probably going to hate it the most. But I'm a vibes and dread person, so it worked for me, and I thought it was good, not great. I've seen a few interviews with the director and it makes a little more sense WRT what they were going for.

Eliminate the narrative and add a better last 3 minute ending and I give it high marks.

I thought Hit Man started strong. Clever idea and enjoyed portrayal of nerdy dude pretending to be a hit man. But lost steam 2nd half attempting to transition to serious vibe. A quote on the movie - “phony seriousness in the second half.” It felt like a long movie / it’s just under 2 hrs. Maybe a slight thumbs up. it has great reviews 95/91 in RT. One list said it’s one of best in 24. Maybe just me but I wasn’t as big on it.

I agree on Last Stop in Yuma County - I liked it. Simple set, minimalist movie, easy straight forward plot but tight and holds tension. influenced by Cohen Bros ( obviously so in some scenes). Plus it’s only 90 mins.

I'm excited for Twisters, which comes out Friday. I love the original so much that I've been very nervous about this one even coming close. Thankfully, the early critical reviews look good so far!

The first one wasnt exactly a good movie but more of a solidly cheesy summer movie that was entertaining - I really liked it as well. The previews of this one look along the same lines "If we see it, we chase it".. or whatever he says.

Have they decided to put Glen Powell in every movie now? It seems that way.

It was a simple story but great actors including Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton, Phillips Seymour Hoffman, Cary Elwes, and others. Steven Spielberg was one of the producers of the original and had some involvement in this one, too. Granted, I'm bias because I'm really into tornadoes, so that may affect my cinematic judgment!

Bttt. Any good recommendations? The series “The Old Man” with Jeff Bridges is decent.
Also liked movie “LaRoy Texas”. Critics 100%. Public 67%
