    It would have to be written in the scholarship as a condition upon acceptance. Do other types of student scholarships have to be paid back if the student drops out?

    Not generally, but there are exceptions. A scholarship might be discontinued during the academic year. For example, a student who is not meeting the terms of their scholarship during fall might receive a spring disbursement, which gets posted to their account and applied first to tuition/fees/etc. The spring scholarship gets pulled back and the student becomes responsible for tuition costs. It's rare, but happens. They wouldn't have to pay back the fall portion though.
