All is well and he's excited. Good luck, EJ.

Seems we can now officially be annoyed and frustrated at the continued bad luck that haunts the team.

Well, at least we got all our bad luck out of the way at the start of October. Right? Right??????

Oddly, my first reaction was: "good for him."

He is a skilled player but his heart is no longer in basketball. So it's probably for the best, and we have more depth in the paint than anticipated, what with Condon and Haugh showing up farther along than expected.

That terrific post depth dissipated rather quickly. Sheesh. Very fortunate Condon seems to be ready to play. Hopefully Shimmy gets healthy. May be a little bumpy in some games early if we get in foul trouble. Fortunately we have experienced guards to steady us until the frosh get experience and Shimmy returns.

I hope he is happy with his decision the first time he watches his teammates going on a big run in the raucous O’Dome. Not sure what he has going on, but that’s a once in a lifetime opportunity he is giving up. He seems at peace though. Wish him the best.

Something happened to make him give it up after all the work of coming to G'ville. Wish him the best dealing with the issue and getting whatever advanced degree he is targeting.

he is allowed to still get his degree if he just chooses to not play after only being here a few months?

I’m conflicted. The right thing to say is good luck EJ and we wish you the best. In my heart, though, I feel as though this is incredibly short-sighted and impulsive to quit basketball when he only has one year left and could possibly make a deep run into the tournament. I don’t know what he’s going through, but I hate this for him. Unless he just doesn’t like the game, he’s going to look back on this with regret, no matter what he tells himself now.

The basketball program mirrors the football program in so many ways it isn't funny. Really, both programs started on the downhill trajectory almost exactly at the same time.

Clearly, we made a Faustian bargain for 2006 - 2008.

yeah, I'm legitmately sad right now for EJ. Having to give up the game is the hardest part for a basketball player. Best wishes to the young man.

They won’t take his scholarship back mid semester. We’re under no obligation to fund it going forward though. If there is a legitimate medical concern, they could offer to put him on a hardship. If he wanted to help the team in some other way, he could stay engaged as a GA and they’d continue to fund his schooling that way too.

Reading what he wrote, it sounds to me like he’s leaving Gainesville though.

For using "Faustian bargain" on a hoops message board, I declare you the winner.

You mean, in 2015? Because we made the Elite 8 in four consecutive seasons and had about as dominant season as one team could in 2013-14. The success we had in both sports for 20+ years is frankly impossible to sustain. History has proven that repeatedly.

sounds like he may have been offered a dream job and decided to start his career? Given he already has a degree from Yale(?) That's the only logical reason I can think of, but what do i know

It being a free country and all, yes? I imagine, though, that you were referring to EJ retaining his scholarship. I'm genuinely curious to know if he plans to stay in G'ville and pursue a grad degree, but feel it's unlikely. He may have felt the urge to move back to the northeast.
