UF has had successful trials on mice, dogs and now four humans. They will be moving into Phase I pediatric clinical trials shortly. Fingers crossed they’re successful as glioblastoma is a real bastard, even for cancer.

New mRNA cancer vaccine triggers fierce immune response to fight malignant brain tumor

This will take years to perfect... and I hope they succeed.

But a vaccine from what? Is there only one cause of brain cancer?

A cure for all types of brain cancer would be nice.

Really cool stuff. This is where mRNA has a a chance to be a real game changer. In cancer treatment. That said. I am not sure why they want to focus on pediatric patients through. Phase 1 they want adult and pediatric participants and phase 2 only pediatric participants.

Should the cause matter? Here is what the article said:

Among the most impressive findings was how quickly the new method, delivered intravenously, spurred a vigorous immune-system response to reject the tumor, said Sayour, principal investigator of the RNA Engineering Laboratory within UF's Preston A. Wells Jr. Center for Brain Tumor Therapy and a UF Health Cancer Center and McKnight Brain Institute investigator who led the multi-institution research team.

"In less than 48 hours, we could see these tumors shifting from what we refer to as 'cold'—immune cold, very few immune cells, very silenced immune response—to 'hot,' very active immune response," he said.

This is more of a treatment from what I gather. I would call it more of a therapeutic. They are using the individual patients tumor to then create an immune response against it.

I had the same question at first as it seemed like the purpose what to create a drug to give all kids. And I was thinking there is no way you would inject a drug into kids for a disease that people have a less than 1% chance of getting in their lifetime.

The odd part to me is why the focus on kids and not all ages.

I am in favor and support all research in fighting cancer. I was tempted to say something bringing up the stupidity of the antivax crowd but decided against it.

Your ignorance is palpable. The fact you still think and call those who did not take the covid shot or those that did and now realize what it was are antivax…defines how ignorant you are.

There was recently a stunning breakthrough against stage 4 pancreatic cancer as well using a mRNA platform.

Ten years from now, if we have not killed ourselves due to overwhelming ignorance, we will look back at the anti-science/ anti-vaxx crowd with disgust and contempt. The fools whose ignorance and hatred were used by charlatans like Atlas, Makary, Lapido and others who lined their pockets at the expense of those who continue to die needlessly, will be a historical laughing stock on par with those who professed that the earth was the center of the universe 400 years ago.

Meanwhile we inch ever closer to curing cancers, stopping multiple viruses and continue to find avenues to save lives through science, at least everywhere other than in Republi-ban strongholds where science and education are vilified.

The hijacks from the same old debates are getting tiresome indeed.

On another note, who do you think is more like Hitler, Biden or Trump? Seems like some good arguments for both sides.

I don’t plan to say anything on the subject of Covid other than to call out the ignorant insinuation made. But it is tiresome having ignorant insinuations made about others…

Back to the topic, research is often driven by finding so that may be why pediatrics was chosen.

Or, in the advancement of the therapy each stage works with a slightly increase size of brain-from mouse to dog to small human? That doesn’t explain the 4 tested humans but….

Either way, this is major news. I’ve lost 3 friends to glio, one only 4 days after diagnosis and another after 3 years of absolute misery.

Good post. I just found it odd that the focus seems to be on pediatrics. Yet the first humans were adults and this therapy seems to be useful regardless of age.

Really hope the results are good. It may be one of those things that is not a cure but brings many more years of quality life to those who one day might suffer from such a terrible disease. It sure seems promising!

Yeah, that form of cancer took my father at age 62. It's a death sentence and I'm glad to hear they are making some potential progress.

What you are suggesting sounds a one size fits all vaccine... and that there is only one cause of brain cancer?

I am not suggesting anything cuz I’m no doctor. The article says it causes antibodies to attack cancer tumors. My question to you was: why does it matter how the tumor got there?

If it works on all tumors than that seems like a very good therapeutic for sure...
