That was my reaction sitting in the stands that night.....but in retrospect it wasn't a poorly designed play and it probably is a big gain/score if executed properly. And given the struggles of the offense once FSU figured out what we couldn't do, we needed easy points while we could get them.
We were manhandling them..they poured everyone into the box. Keep pecking away with quick hitters but instead call worlds slowest play into an army of guys coming full steam. Horrible horrible horrible..can’t suggest otherwise. Things were working fine and significantly to our advantage. No reason to call that…just keep jamming it down their throat. If that play wasn’t called we win that game and shut their mouth.
Then why weren't we able to to jam it down their throats thereafter? I'll solve it for you, because we were mixing it up.....and a play like that was part of the mix. We simply could not jam it down their throats because their DL was better than our OL. Period. Saying we win the game without that play is nonsensical. And FYI, we didn't call the play into guys coming full steam....we called the misdirection into the guys coming full steam and then went back to the area they were to vacate. Again, our QB drifted to his right and into the pass rush AND away from his target, and our OL had at least one guy screw up. And every now and then the defense also gets a little credit for making a play. Everyone is a genius on playcalling after the fact

I was just thinking and that "forth and dumb" play... Lol. It could be another one because Kirby was known, for a while, as a dumb gameday coach when he got to UGA. He got smarter assistant coaches to help him through that.
One of dumbest play calls in history...quite frankly it cost him a NC. That being said trick plays try to hit a home run and you should practice them over and over and over again until your offense has it down to perfection when it is called. It should be smooth as glass and fool everyone on the defense you need to fool and be ran when they least expect it... Im not sure we ever looked like we had a smooth trick play call the last two years. Most of em look like a rag tag pick up game of kill the man with the ball. Essentially it looked like we practiced it maybe a couple times at practice the week before. Sadly, almost every time we were better off just continuing to run the base offense for better or worse.
